LOUGHBOROUGH Dynamo are hoping to pull off one of the biggest signings in their history as they chase former £1 million striker Tony Thorpe.
The 34-year-old, who has scored 137 goals in the football league, is in talks with Dynamo manager John Folwell on Wednesday night to discuss a possible move to the NSG.
But Loughborough face competition for the former QPR and Luton Town hero, not least from BBC Radio Leicester for whom Thorpe has been providing commentary on Leicester City games recently.
“He is coming towards the end of his playing career but he still wants to play,” Folwell confirmed. “He’s scored over 100 goals at league level and he would be a great acquisition if we can get him but we just have to see what we can offer him. He has a number of other options.
“If we do get him he will be a valuable asset who will be able to help out our young strikers such as Kris Nurse and hopefully he will also bring a few more fans through the turnstyles.
“We will bring in another striker before Christmas.”
Thorpe began his career as an apprentice at Leicester before moving to Luton on a free where he became a cult hero scoring 61 goals in 145 appearances between 1992 and 1998.
After a brief spell at Fulham he moved to Bristol City for £1 million and scored 62 goals in 151 games before a successful spell at QPR between 2003 and 2005. He began this season playing for Woking in the Blue Square Premier.
“The defeat at Stamford may have been a blessing in disguise as it made me and Mike (McLarnon assistant manager) decide to make changes,” Folwell said. “We released a few players and brought a few in and we have been making good progress since.”
Craig Noble, Matt Ottley and Eugene Francis have moved on from the NSG with defenders Lewis Allen joining from Spalding and Joe Latham making his loan move from Oadby permanent.
Tomorrow Loughborough travel to Sheffield FC who they beat 2-1 two weeks ago.
“We hope to have everyone back from suspensions and injuries,” continued Folwell. “But Sheffield are a decent side who are good up front and were one of the pre-season favourites so we will have to be at our best to pick something up.”

Rutland and Stamford Mercury - Ex-QPR Tony Thorpe
Thorpe to boost promotion push
EXPERIENCED striker Tony Thorpe is set to fire the Daniels' promotion push.
The 34-year-old put pen-to-paper at the Vic Couzens Stadium this week after a distinguished Football League career which produced nearly 150 goals from more than 350 professional appearances.
Thorpe’s successful playing career has included spells with Luton Town, Fulham, Bristol City, Reading, Queens Park Rangers, Rotherham, Swindon, Colchester and Grimsby.
He has recently dropped into the non-league where he has featured for Stevenage, Tamworth, Barton Rovers, Woking and Brackley before joining the Daniels this week.
Thorpe had been due to make his debut in Tuesday night’s UniBond President’s Cup clash with Lincoln United which was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
He is now set to make his bow in Saturday’s UniBond Division One South clash at Rushall Olympic, much to the delight of Daniels boss Dougie Keast.
Keast said: “Tony has got a great pedigree and is a very good person to have around.
“He’s got a lot of know-how. He has terrific decision making and is also a good talker. He is someone all the strikers can learn from.
“Tony is a quality addition to the squad which will give us a bit more depth and more competition for places.
“It’s a two-way arrangement. He’s going to come and see how he gets on and we’ll see how he does.
“He doesn’t play football for fun though – he’s coming to give a good account of himself.”
Thorpe joins a Stamford squad who will be protecting a nine-match unbeaten league run at Rushall on Saturday....

Standard/Raoul Simons - Flowers wilting after blooper
The perils of football commentary were brought home to former QPR coach Tim Flowers during a 5Live stint for Sunday's West Brom-Portsmouth game. When Baggies forward Ishmael Miller went down injured in the second half, Flowers drew on his 25 years of experience in the game to repeatedly inform listeners that the in-pain striker was only suffering from “cramp”. That diagnosis, however, started to look shaky as a stretcher was called and fell apart two days later, when West Brom announced that Miller was out for the season with knee ligament damage.
