Ramage issues warning to former colleagues
Nov 27 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle
PETER RAMAGE has warned his old team-mates that they face a tough battle to break down Swansea City tomorrow – as his former boss Paulo Sousa brings his resolute Swans to Tyneside.
The Geordie boy played under ex-Portugal international Sousa at Queens Park Rangers last term and knows that the former Juventus and Inter Milan star’s tight-fisted back four will arrive at St James’ aiming to record their 12th clean sheet this term.
Their impressive record also means they head north in fourth place and hoping to break into a top two dominated by United and West Brom.
When asked about Swansea’s mean defence, Ramage told the Chronicle: “I’m not surprised to be fair, as he’s a very thorough manager.
“You train Monday to Saturday, and it’s all geared towards the opposition, more so than any other manager I’ve worked with.
“Every session’s geared towards something specific – everything’s thought out, and he tried to make things hard for the opposition.
“He’s very thorough about things, and has that European mentality.
“He thinks about the potential problems you’ll come up against, and tries to rectify them.”
And Ramage is still full of respect for Sousa despite his controversial departure from Rangers last season.
He said: “He’s a really good coach – one of the best I’ve come across in terms of preparation.
“When we played them earlier in the season we went down to nine men, and they caused us a lot of problems.
“They kept the ball really well, which is something he preached when he was at our place.
“They pass and move, and create space for players to create chances.
“He’s very much a football man – he lives and breathes football, and I’m not surprised they are where they are.
“They don’t score many goals, but they’re solid at the back.
“They don’t concede many goals, and get a lot of 1-0 victories.
“They’re a really tough outfit.”
