Wanderers make it two wins out of two after double penalty drama

FORMER Brentford striker Matt Harrold scored a penalty and missed one as Wanderers' revival continued with victory over ten-man Brentford.
After waiting 15 long matches to enjoy the taste of victory the Blues completed a much-needed London double with tonight's action-packed victory over Brentford coming hot on the heels of Saturday's success at Millwall.
The back-to-back succeses, for the first time this season, have breathed new life into Wanderers' season and offered real belief that they can escape the drop after a season where they had looked doomed to the drop.
But it was a night which caused Adams Park hearts to flutter.
After taking the lead with a 48th minute Harrold penalty, the Wycombe striker had an opportunity to make home pulses rest easier with a second spot kick.
Harrold went the same way but this time keeper Wojciech Szczesny saved it with his trailing leg to set up a nailbiting climax – but despite the nerves Blues held out without too many alarms.
But the Bees, who went up with Wycombe as the champions last season, felt hugely aggreived about the 48th minute penalty that beat them.
Michael Duberry's downward header back towards the penalty spot cannoned into the arm of a Bees defender Karleigh Osborne who couldn't get out of the way – and the referee pointed to the spot.
It was ironic that it should have been Duberry's header that led to the goal.
The Blues skipper who was returning to the side because of injury to Chris Westwood was roundly and loudly booed by his own fans when the teams were read out.
But his detractors soon forgot their misgivings and were jumping for joy when his head won them penalty number one.
And while Brentford argued that one they could have no arguments about the 66th minute second as James Wilson was red-carded for chopping down Gareth Ainsworth as the on-loan QPR player was through on goal.
Nor could they have any real arguments about the scoreline.
Wanderers were the better side and the more ambitious side and if Szczesny had not produced two fabulous tip over saves to deny Kevin Betsy in the first half, Wycombe's margin of victory might have been greater.
Harrold was also denied by a last minute block by Sam Wood, who at the other end was guilty of missing Brentford's best chance on the injury time Blues had to survive a desperate finale in which the Bees keeper headed goalwards from a corner.
Then the Bees argued they should have had a penalty, claiming Kevin O'Connor's free kick had struck the arm of a Wycombe defender.
Chaos reigned but the ref was having none of it and seconds later blew the wistle to the relief of the home fans in a 5,181 crowd.
Blues win did come at a cost though with Scott Davies limping off during the first half – but with no game this week Wanderers will be hoping he is back soon.
