Crew Chronicle Crewe Alex: Walton on stand-by as Schumacher strugglesNov 4 2009 by Peter Morse, Crewe Chronicle SIMON Walton will get the nod to face York City in the FA Cup if Steve Schumacher fails to prove his fitness. The 22-year-old midfielder, on a season-long loan from Plymouth Argyle, has not started a game since the 5-3 defeat at Accrington Stanley on September 25.Since then boss Dario Gradi has felt the ex-Leeds and QPR man has lacked fitness and discipline. But Walton impressed as a substitute during the 4-0 win at Cheltenham on Saturday. Now with Schumacher struggling to shake off a groin strain he is line to partner James Bailey in the Alex midfield. Gradi said: “Simon came here to play but I came to win. “Having said that, I told him he is the next one in and he’ll play if Schumacher isn’t fit. “Steve would be a big miss, but I’ve been pleased with Simon. He has listened and is keen to learn and I have no worries about playing him.” Crewe are Walton’s ninth club. He has a poor disciplinary record, faced off-field problems and suffered a broken leg 18 months ago. But at times he has demonstrated the qualities that have persuaded clubs to part with around £1.5m for him in the past. He wants to rebuild his career and – as an ex-Premiership player – has shown remarkable patience in waiting his chance www.crewechronicle.co.uk/crewe-alex-fc/crewe-alex-fc-news/2009/11/04/crewe-alex-walton-on-stand-by-as-schumacher-struggles-96135-25082932/
