CHELSEA TACKLING KNIFE CRIME
November 2, 2009
Chelsea Football Club is stepping up the fight against knife and gun crime this week.
For the last three months the club has been consulting with young people on our anti-crime projects in London to design a campaign led by - and aimed towards - the young people themselves.
Chelsea has joined forces Wandsworth Youth Offending Team, the Metropolitan Police and Choice FM's Masterstepz (pictured with Ashley Cole) - himself a victim of knife crime - to produce a DVD highlighting the dangers of carrying weapons. The young people involved with the initiative have also designed t-shirts to support their campaign and demonstrate that when it comes to carrying weapons there can be no winners.
Midfielder Jon Mikel Obi has recorded an introduction to the Every Life Matters DVD and the campaign has been backed by Ashley Cole.
Earlier this year Ashley and John Terry joined the Prime Minister and leading anti-knife campaigners including Damilola Taylor's father Richard and actress Brooke Kinsella to meet young people from across the capital to discuss the issue. Cole and Terry also invited Richard Taylor and Amber Keeney, a young victim of a knife attack, to the training ground to meet the team.
The left-back welcomed the chance to get involved: 'Obviously you hear about knife crime on the TV and in the papers but it's only when you sit down with the kids you realise just how bad the problem is,' he said.
'It just blew me away, things have changed from when I was growing up, kids are now killing each other just to get respect. It's great that the club is doing this work and I hope this DVD will help kids understand that you don't need weapons to make a name for yourself.'
Masterstepz said: 'As a DJ, I feel I have a real responsibility to speak to the youth and encourage them to think about their actions. Many young people listen to my show on Choice FM and want to follow in my footsteps or get in to music but you can't do that without positive focus.
'It's great to be supporting Chelsea with the launch of their DVD Every Life Matters. If one young person listens to what's said on the DVD and decides to follow the right path, then it's all worth it.'
The DVD will be shown at schools in south-west London and at Chelsea's anti-crime initiatives.
Chelsea's coaches will also be hosting a five-a-side tournament to bring together groups from across the borough to highlight and showcase the campaign.
Richard Taylor, who has now been appointed the Prime Minister's special envoy on knife crime, welcomed the campaign, saying: 'I know from visiting the club and meeting the players how supportive they are about this issue.
'Too many parents have lost children and hopefully this campaign can help save more families the anguish of having their children taken away from them. This project has our full support.'
