Derby chairman Pearson exits club

Pearson arrived at the club two years ago and employed Nigel Clough
Derby County have announced that chairman Adam Pearson is to leave the club to "pursue new challenges".

The ex-Hull chairman has been at Derby since October 2007, and appointed Nigel Clough as manager in January 2009.

A Derby statement said the decision was "reached through mutual consent" and Pearson will be replaced by chief executive and president Tom Glick.

Pearson said: "I have enjoyed my two years at Derby despite not achieving the playing success we had hoped for."

Derby, who were relegated from the Premier League in Pearson's first season at Pride Park, currently sit 19th in the Championship but Pearson feels he leaves with the club in good shape to progress under Clough's tutelage.

"It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with Nigel Clough over the past 10 months," he added. "He is a manager in whom the supporters and Board can totally trust with the future of their club.

"I have no doubt at all that Nigel, supported by his staff, will go on to be a truly great manager for this football club and create his own legacy, in the footsteps of his father [Brian].

"Under Nigel Clough's management the wage bill is now under control, the squad size is under control, the Academy structure is solid and we have a management team in place who will take the team forward."

Pearson bought Hull in 2001 when they were near the bottom of what is now League Two and in administration.

He left in June 2007 after two promotions had seen the Tigers climb to the Championship and, following his departure from Derby, has been linked with a return to the KC Stadium with the future of Hull chairman Paul Duffen in doubt.

ADAM PEARSON LEAVES DERBY COUNTY

Coming up to the second year anniversary of Adam Pearson's arrival at Derby County Football Club, following lengthy discussions within the Board and investor group, it has been decided by all parties that now is a good time for Adam to pursue new challenges away from Derby County.

The decision for Adam to leave has been reached through mutual consent and all parties believe it to be in the best interests of the Club and the individuals involved.

The Moor Farm and Pride Park operations will now be unified under the control of Tom Glick, reporting directly into company Chairman Andy Appleby.

Adam Pearson said: "Surprising as it may seem, I have thoroughly enjoyed the two years I have spent at Derby County, despite not achieving the playing success on the pitch we had all hoped for and worked so hard for in that time.

"It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with Nigel Clough over the past ten months. He is a manager in whom the supporters and Board can totally trust with the future of their club.

"I have no doubt at all that Nigel, supported by his staff, will go on to be a truly great manager for this football club and create his own legacy, in the footsteps of his father.

GLICK LOOKS FORWARD TO ENHANCED ROLE

Derby County CEO Tom Glick says he is "ready and eager" for his enhanced role, after taking on responsibilities for football operations at the club following the departure of Adam Pearson.

Glick has earned praise throughout the game for leading the Rams successful commercial operation, overseeing a vast increase in the club's revenue and helping reduce the debt to the lowest level for decades.

With Pearson leaving to pursue new challenges the club has decided to refocus the organisation, with Tom Glick inheriting football operations, meaning a closer working relationship with manager Nigel Clough.

The move brings together Pride Park Stadium and Moor Farm Training Ground under the leadership of the Chief Executive.

Tom told dcfc.co.uk: "This is a new challenge for me but one I am ready and eager to start.

"As CEO I have concentrated on improving the business side of our club, in terms of bringing stability to our finances, putting supporters central to our concerns and looking at new ways to improve the service we offer to our fans.

"During this period Adam Pearson and Nigel Clough have been laying foundations for long term success on the pitch, by bringing the wage bill and squad size under control.

"Adam is leaving us with the football side of our club in a healthy and sustainable position, with a manager and coaching staff ready to take us on to the next level of our development.

Paul Duffen has resigned as chairman of Hull City, fuelling speculation that Adam Pearson is poised to return to the role.

Duffen's resignation also raises further question marks over Phil Brown’s future as manager with the team having recorded only two league wins this season. Yesterday, Hull were forced to deny that Brown had been dismissed after renewed speculation yesterday prompted two leading bookmakers to suspend betting on the first manager to be dismissed this season in the Premier League. However, Brown arrived to take training as normal this morning.

Duffen explained he had taken the decision because he felt ultimately responsible for the club's poor results this season.

"When I succeeded Adam Pearson as chairman of Hull City Football Club in June 2007 I was very aware of the responsibility to build on his legacy," Duffen said in a statement. "I articulated an intention to take the Tigers to the previously uncharted waters of the Premier League and to the eternal credit of the players and coaching staff, that seemingly ridiculous ambition was achieved 11 months later thanks to a victorious debut appearance at Wembley, in the play-off final .

"The start to our maiden top flight campaign broke all previous records for a newly promoted side and ensured that 2008 will forever be remembered as the most remarkable year in Hull City's history.

The club issued a statement on their website to confirm it had accepted Duffen's resignation and would begin the process of replacing him immediately.

"The club has received a letter of resignation from Paul Duffen, executive chairman of Hull City AFC which has been accepted and is effective immediately. Paul's departure is on a totally amicable basis and he leaves with our best wishes as a friend of the club and its directors.

"The club wishes to express its gratitude to Paul for his outstanding contribution as chairman during a period of unprecedented success for Hull City AFC.

"The recruitment process has commenced in respect of the appointment of a new executive chairman and a further statement in relation to this will be issued by the club on Monday November 2."

Pearson appointed Brown as manager in 2006, after Peter Taylor had left for Crystal Palace, but he said that the club needed new investment and sold his shares to Russell Bartlett, an Essex-based property investor, who installed Duffen as chairman. Pearson took the role as executive chairman of Derby County, where he has had differences of opinion with the club’s American owners. His resignation statement hinted at the need to rein in costs.

The potential return of Pearson could be the boost Hull need after their poor start to the season. He and Peter Wilkinson, an internet entrepreneur, bought the club for £360,000 in 2001, when it was in administration. Hull were sold for £13 million two years ago, making a hefty profit for the pair.

Should Pearson return to Hull, his first task will be to turn around the club’s fortunes on the pitch. Hull are in the bottom three and Brown’s three-year tenure has been in question since they escaped relegation on the final day of last season.
