Football League - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE TIGER CUBS
Posted on: 15.10.2009
After a hugely successful year that has seen worldwide recognition for their work, the DS Active QPR Tiger Cubs football team has celebrated its first birthday.
Created to provide children and young people with Down's Syndrome (DS) the chance to enjoy the same benefits as their able-bodied peers, Tiger Cubs aims to improve the physical, social and emotional health of the players.
In the last 12 months the popularity of the team has spread not only throughout the Loftus Road faithful, but across the globe following a match against Down's Syndrome Hong Kong Dragons (HKDSA Dragons).
"The QPR Tiger Cubs is an integral part of our far reaching social responsibility programme that builds upon the QPR tradition of supporting Youth, Family and Health related causes," said Andy Evans, CEO of QPR in the Community Trust.
"The number of children and their families that now participate in the Tiger Cubs programme is incredible and the benefits for both the child and their families will be long lasting.
"The very warm reception from our fans during the half time activities at the recent home match against Barnsley was the most heart warming 10 minutes I have experienced at a football ground in a long time."
During a very busy first year, BBC London News broadcast a joint training exercise between the Cubs and Fulham Badgers in November 2008 and a month later the QPR Youth Team celebrated Christmas with the Cubs at a training session.
The Cubs and the QPR First Team joined forces to mark this year's annual World Downs Syndrome Day on 21 March when each country holds their own celebrations.
Also earlier this year, three unique football teams played in front of over 1,000 spectators during the Down's Syndrome Association's annual six-a-side charity tournament at Stamford Bridge.
The competition included the showpiece match with a Badgers and Cubs joint team taking on special guests HKDSA Dragons.
The Tiger Cubs meet every Monday night and welcome young people aged from five to 25 with DS at their hour-and-a-half long sessions which attract on average between 20 and 30 participants a week.
