Guidolin set to be appointed...Vialli spoken to...John Collins
Italian Channel Four - Guidolin offered QPR job Thursday 11 October, 2007
Ex-Palermo tactician Francesco Guidolin has been offered the manager’s job at Queens Park Rangers.
A number of Italians such as Gianluca Vialli and even Marcello Lippi had been linked with the post since the dismissal of Mike Gregory on October 1.
The speculation had been linked to the fact that the club’s new owner is Italian entrepreneur Flavio Briatore.
The whispers proved to be correct as Guidolin has received the call to guide the struggling Super Hoops.
The Shepherd’s Bush outfit recorded their first win of the season against Norwich on Monday – a game which Guidolin watched from the stands.
The 52-year-old has spent time at the helm of Udinese, Bologna, Genoa and endured a miserable spell at Monaco in 2005-06.
He is mostly associated with Palermo after two spells at the club and he was in charge for the Rosanero’s dream start to last season.
Guidolin is set to arrive in London tomorrow to finalise details and put pen to paper on a contract. Channel 4
The Times - October 11, 2007 Bernie Ecclestone targets John Collins for QPR Phil Gordon
Hibernian could face a huge fight to hang on to John Collins after Queens Park Rangers yesterday stepped up their pursuit of the Edinburgh club’s highly-rated manager. The Coca-Cola Championship side – who are now backed by Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One chief and Flavio Briatore, the owner of Team Renault – are ready to offer Collins a £40 million budget to transform their fortunes.
The west London club are believed to have asked Hibernian for permission to speak to Collins, who was yesterday named as the Clydesdale Bank Manager of the Month for September after taking the Easter Road side into second place in the title race after last weekend’s defeat of Rangers at Ibrox.
“I do not know anything about this,” Collins insisted yesterday on picking up his award. His contract with Hiber-niain runs until June 2009 but the club will have to hope that he chooses to put the quality of life in Edinburgh ahead of the money on offer in London.
The former Scotland player moved his family back to the city from Monaco, where he retired after a successful playing career, when Hibernian appointed him manager last October. Collins guided Hibernian to the CIS Insurance Cup in March 2007, the club’s first silverware in 16 years, and has created a fresh new side with an accent on home-grown talent after raking in around £9 million from the sales of Scott Brown, Kevin Thomson, Steven Whittaker and Ivan Sproule in recent months.
He has had to recruit new signings for a fraction of the money brought in, as Hibernian put the transfer proceeds into a new training ground. The 40-year-old enjoys living in Edinburgh and his role with Hibernian, the club he first played for before moving on to Celtic, AS Monaco, Everton and Fulham. Hibernian are definitely a work-in-progress but he would be able to command a salary of around £1 million if he took over QPR, as well as the huge budget that is being put in place to try to take the west London side back into the top flight.
QPR have already spoken to Gianluca Vialli, the former Chelsea and Watford manager, about taking over after the sacking of John Gregory on October 1, with Mick Harford having been put in temporary charge.
“I don’t know whether Vialli is good or bad,” Ecclestone said at the time. “Flavio knows him. He has been talking to him. From a coach you need someone who motivates all the players. The guy sitting there can’t tell them what to do. They know to kick the ball in the goal. You don’t have to tell them that. You want then to feel that they can win when they go out on the pitch.”
For the Hibernian board, the real fear is that the club could lose a second ambitious young manager in a year to the Championship. Tony Mowbray was poached by West Bromwich Albion last October and took his side to the Premier League play-offs.
Collins preferred to distance himself from the speculation yesterday and to concentrate on his Manager of the Month award as well as to shift the praise to Tommy Craig, his assistant, and the players.
“So far, the players have been fantastic – every one of them,” Collins said. “They have really done great for us but they have to keep going and our job is to push them to the next level every day in training.
“It’s always nice to pick up awards but this is for everyone at the club for all the hard work they have put in. Tommy Craig puts in a lot of work and certainly deserves this every bit as much as I do. It’s recognition for the whole coaching staff, the medical team and, of course, the players. The players deserve credit for the way that they have remained focused.
“They have all worked really hard and taken on board everything that has been said to them by us. It’s been a good month but we are always looking to improve and we will continue to try and do that.”

The Scotsman - Collins rejects approach from QPR - GLENN GIBBONS
John Collins confirmed yesterday that he has rejected an approach from Queens Park Rangers. The London club had targeted the Hibernian manager as the successor to John Gregory, who was sacked last week as a result of QPR's plunge to bottom of the Championship in England.
Collins, who is contracted to Hibs until 2009, admitted there had been contact between Loftus Road and Easter Road, but insisted that he had no intention of terminating his agreement before it had run its course.
"There was something," said Collins, "but it was just a phone call. But that's done, it's in the past and it won't be happening. I have a job to do here and I intend to see it through. My contract covers the rest of this season and the following year.
"I never broke a contract during my playing career, and I've no intention of doing so now."
It seems certain that QPR, now in the ownership of the Formula 1 magnate, Bernie Ecclestone, and his partner, Flavio Briatore, owner of Team Renault, could have been in a position to make Collins a lucrative offer.
Ecclestone and Briatore are reportedly willing to bankroll the club to the tune of £40 million in an effort to rescue them from their present plight. QPR were the last team in Britain to open their win account this season.
The approach from London amounts to a tribute to the work Collins has done in less than a year at Easter Road, winning the CIS Cup and leading Hibs to an undefeated start to the current league campaign. It is also confirmation that the manner in which he faced down the player revolt earlier this year has made an impression on prospective employers.
There seems little doubt that there will be more predators in the future. Scotsman
Daily Mail - Hibs boss Collins turns down QPR job
Hibernian boss John Collins has turned down an approach from managerless QPR.
Collins, 39, is approaching the end of his first year in charge of the Easter Road club, during which he has steered Hibs to a CIS Insurance Cup triumph.
They are unbeaten after nine matches of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League season, and in second place.
Collins emerged as a possible contender for the Loftus Road job following John Gregory's exit.
New Hoops chiefs Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore are seeking a high-profile appointment but Collins insists he is committed to Hibernian.
He said: "There was something, but it was just a phone call. But that's done, it's in the past and it won't be happening.
"I have a job to do here and I intend to see it through."
Former Scotland midfielder Collins is contracted to Hibernian until the end of next season, and he added: "I never broke a contract during my playing career, and I've no intention of doing so now.
Mirror - Del boy deal a stunner for QPR EXCLUSIVE
Qpr's new boss Francesco Guidolin has been given a £20million transfer war chest - and will launch an audacious bid to bring Alessandro Del Piero to Shepherd's Bush. Juventus legend Del Piero, 33 next month, is expected to leave the Serie A giants after not being offered a new deal and has already been made an offer by MLS club New York Red Bulls.
But QPR's new owner Flavio Briatore, the Formula One tycoon, wants to see whether he can lure Del Piero (above) to Loftus Road in one of the most unlikely transfers ever seen in English football.
Del Piero remains one of the biggest names in world soccer - and Briatore knows that signing him would put Rangers on the map.
Former Palermo boss Guidolin, 52, has already made moves to bring in ex-Juventus chief scout Franco Ceravelo - and that link could prove influential.
Rangers are currently in deep relegation trouble but Briatore is desperate to make them the glamour club of the Championship - on the way to regaining the top flight.
Briatore has already welcomed his ex-girlfriend, supermodel Naomi Campbell, into the directors' box at QPR - Del Piero would be another unlikely arrival. Mirror
