- A Sunday league footballer died yesterday after being attacked on the pitch at the end of the match.
- Police arrested two men – a 19-year-old and another aged in his 40s – who were last night being questioned by detectives.
- The man who died was 43 and had turned out for amateurs Old Greenfordians. The dead man’s team had played Kinghill Town FC, where a source said: “The victim was an Old Greenfordians player. I didn’t see what happened as it was after the match.
- “I’m not able to say anything else as we have to speak to the police.”
- The Metropolitan Police said: “The Met’s Homicide and Serious Crime Command has been informed. The death is being treated as suspicious. Two men have been arrested in connection with the man’s death and taken to a London police station.”
- Officers yesterday cordoned off the part of pitch where the attack took place at the Little Harlington Playing Fields in Harlington, Middlesex. It is next to Chelsea’s old training ground, now used by Championship side QPR. China’s Olympic team ended up brawling on the pitch during a friendly in 2007.
- Ron Dunning, chairman of Hayes and Dis-trict Sunday Football League, said: “We do not know exactly what happened. We’ll speak to the Football Association and release a statement once we have reviewed the incident.”
- The London Ambulance Service said: “We were called just before 12.20pm. The patient had stopped breathing. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at scene.”
