Our last meeting at Loftus Road
February 20, 2004 - QPR Official Site
QPR 1 Peterborough 1 Attendance: 13,276 Referee: P Joslin
Kevin Gallen saved Rangers' blushes at Loftus Road this evening with a last gasp equaliser against a spirited Peterborough United.
Rangers' leading scorer latched on to Tony Thorpe's through ball and coolly slotted home to earn Rangers a point that looked beyond them as the clock ticked down.
Peterborough were devastated having stifled Rangers for long periods and a somewhat disjointed display from the home team had looked likely to send the Loftus Road faithful home with nothing - until Super Kev's strike at the death.
The Rangers manager had been forced to make two late changes to his starting line up, after Martin Rowlands and Chris Day failed late fitness tests.
Matthew Rose was handed a start on the right of midfield, whilst Nick Culkin stepped up to replace the injured Day. Kevin McLeod also returned to the left flank, after falling ill just prior to kick off last Saturday.
Peterborough created the first chance of the game, when Clive Platt got the better of Gino Padula.
He sent in a low cross that was met by Andy Clarke in the box and although Posh's top goalscorer connected with his first time volley, Nick Culkin held the shot.
Rangers then sprang into attack. Padula sent in a teasing cross which was met by the head of Paul Furlong, but was seen away for a corner by the rising Posh defence.
Rangers continued to apply the pressure, with Terrell Forbes sending in a powerful drive which kept rising over Mark Tyler's crossbar.
The home side then forced a corner in the 10th minute - Marc Bircham playing in Gallen who was closed down before he could get a strike away.
Padula then sent his cross to the far post, which Furlong headed goalward. However, Furlong's powerful effort was cleared awkwardly off the goal-line by Posh defender Sagi Burton - with appeals for hand ball waved away.
On 20 minutes Bircham made a piercing run through the heart of midfield. With the Posh defence backing off, Bircham took the ball inside the box, only to be felled while preparing to release his strike.
The Posh defender took the man rather than the ball, but again - play was allowed to continue
Gareth Jelleyman was forced out mid-way through the first half. Peterborough manager Barry Fry brought on Tommy Williams, who was welcomed back to Loftus Road with a mixture of boos and polite applause. With only five minutes of the half remaining, Bircham won Rangers a free-kick 25 yards out from goal. Furlong and McLeod stood menacingly over the ball, with Furlong hitting his strike low after Palmer laid off the ball.
The ball ricocheted off legs and out wide to the right flank, with Rose forcing a corner from the follow up.
However, Peterborough were soon to take the lead, scoring in the 44th minute, and somewhat against the run of play. Williams sent in a delicious cross from deep on the left flank and Clive Platt rose unchallenged to head home from six yards out.
Posh had the first opportunity of the half, going close to doubling their lead. Curtis Woodhouse sent in a well weighted free-kick from the right flank, which found the feet of Peterborough's Mark Alber, who should have done better, turning his first time shot around Culkin's upright, much to the relief of the Rangers fans.
However, Rangers were intent of making inroads of their own. McLeod connected sweetly to a raking Marc Bircham ball which picked him out from 40 yards. However, McLeod saw his shot tipped over by Tyler in the Posh goal.
From the resulting Padula corner, Gallen volleyed from the clearance. His 25 yard shot sailed over a maze of bodies, but into the chest of Tyler.
A foul on Marc Bircham by Woodhouse then earned the Posh midfielder the first caution of the game on 52 minutes.
Seven minutes later, Ian Holloway rang the changes with no fewer than three substitutions.
Tony Thorpe came in attack to replace Furlong, while Richard Johnson came on for Palmer in the centre of midfield to make his first appearance in a Rangers shirt. Matthew Rose made way for Jamie Cureton.
However, only a minute later, Clarke Carlisle went down after colliding with Terrell Forbes. The Rangers defender was forced to leave the field, and the Rs continued with 10 men until Carlisle returned seven minutes later.
The injured Carlisle pushed up into attack, with Rangers throwing everything they could at the Posh defence. Bircham won another free-kick on 70 minutes, but Padula, this time, was too long on the cross.
Andy Clarke then made way for David Farrell as the Posh tried to firm things up - but it was Rangers who were on all-out attack.
First Gallen sent his shot sailing over the bar from close range on 75 minutes after latching onto a failed clearance. Then Cureton put through Thorpe two minutes later but the Posh 'keeper beat him to the ball.
Rangers continued to press, but Peterborough went close again to catching Rangers on the break. Goalscorer Platt bored down on goal, forcing Culkin to come off his line.
Culkin, well out of his box, met the rising ball, colliding with Platt, but clearing the danger, and earning a caution for his troubles.
With four minutes of time added, Rangers continued to search for an equaliser. And it came, created by the initial touch from make-shift forward Carlisle, who found Thorpe running through on goal, slipping it to Gallen - who found the back of the net.
Rangers weren't satisfied and wanted more than a point for their troubles, but in the end it wasn't to be, and they were forced to settle for a draw.

Peterborough Today - Preview: Magilton's in one of the hottest managerial seats- IF Posh start getting close to that elusive first Championship victory tomorrow spare a thought for QPR manager Jim Magilton, one of football's nice guys. Magilton, who was sacked by Ipswich Town in April for failing to steer them into the Championship play-offs, jumped straight into the hottest managerial seat of them all at Loftus Road.
Since controversial owner Flavio Briatore assumed control of the London Club in August 2007, he has employed seven managers. That's an average lifespan of just three-and-a-half months and 14 matches apiece!
Briatore, who is more famous as a Formula One chief with Renault, breezed into the club in the summer of 2007 alongside Motor Racing guru Bernie Ecclestone and multi-billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and promised Champions League football within four years.
It didn't seem too much to ask considering QPR were rated the richest club in the UK, until the Arabs arrived at Manchester City, but, while Mittal apparently spent £30 million of his £26 billion fortune on his daughter's wedding, investment in the playing side has been limited, while accusations of Briatore possessing too much influence in the dressing room were also given as a reason for mediocre results.
No wonder then that Magilton insisted on total control of team matters before accepting the post and signing a two-year contract.
He now believes that he has the playing squad and the boardroom backing capable of pursuing a promotion spot, especially as he secured his first win as manager at Sc**thorpe in QPR's last outing.
Magilton said: "I'm an ambitious man and I have an ambitious board. It will be a great challenge reaching the Premier League, but if we progress year on year we will have a great chance.
"The playing squad looks strong enough, although it was a big relief to secure our first win at Sc**thorpe. There was a lot to like about the way we played in that match and I'm confident we will start moving up the table.
"I wasn't unduly concerned about our form, but we did need a win. We've got it now and I expect the players to hit the ground running again this weekend.
"We've had a bit of criticism about the way we started the season, but the players have stood tall and been brave. We know we can play better as a group and we will.
"I have a very honest bunch of players who are responding well to what I want to achieve. We need to play with a lot more composure, but our first win will have done us a lot of good.
"We have as tough a game as any this weekend though as Peterborough are a decent side.
FIRST WIN: Jim Magilton. They have an excellent set-up with a great chairman, a great director of football and an outstanding young manager.”

Peterborough Today - Preview: Williams won't deserve the boos at Loftus Road - TOMMY Williams expects to get booed within 30 seconds of the start when he returns to one of his former clubs QPR tomorrow, but he won't deserve it. The dashing Posh left-back spent just over a season on loan at Loftus Road seven years ago and helped them to the play-off final in the old Division Two against Cardiff in the 2002-03 campaign.
But that's when it all went sour for Williams, in the eyes of some QPR fans at least, as his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a goal six minutes from the end of extra-time.
Williams said: "There is one moment from that final that I always get reminded about whenever I see any QPR fans.
"If I bump into them on holiday or wherever all they remember is me running the entire length of the Millennium Stadium, beating seven men on the way, and then shooting instead of passing to Paul Furlong in the middle.
"They tend to forget that I played a big part in winning the play-off semi-final as I set up two goals against Oldham, but that's some fans for you. I expect I'll get reminded of that one moment after about 30 seconds tomorrow.
"But I actually loved every minute of my time there. I was sent on loan there from Birmingham for an entire season when Ian Holloway (above) was the QPR manager and then for about four months of the following season.
"It's a great club. The ground is nice and compact so the fans are close to the players and the atmosphere is superb.
"I picked up a couple of bad injuries there so I didn't play that much, but when I did the fans were pretty good to me on the whole.
"I've only been back there once and that was with Posh when I set up a goal for Clive Platt . I was jeered a bit that night and I expect it will be the same tomorrow.
"I'm looking forward to it though. The club has changed a bit since my days there and there is only Martin Rowlands there from my playing days.
"The expectation for success was always there and it must be even greater now because the finances they have available.
"I hope they do well. I have friends and family who support QPR so I'm always looking out for their results. I don't support them though, I follow Chelsea which is another reason why they will boo me!"
Williams is in his third spell at Posh. He first arrived alongside energetic midfielder Jimmy Bullard from West Ham in 2001 and was so impressive he landed a £350,000 transfer to Birmingham City before he had completed a full season at London Road.
Birmingham's immediate promotion to the Premier League probably didn't help Williams' career and after loan spells at QPR and Posh he moved on to Barnsley, Gillingham, Swansea and Wycombe before returning to Posh during the January transfer window of 2008.
He missed the promotion run-in because of injury last season, but started the Championship campaign as first-choice left-back.
Williams added: "I've been happy with my performances and the team's on the whole. We can write off the Preston game, but in the others we competed well.
"And we were as solid as we have been against Crystal Palace in our last outing.
We restricted them to long shots and only conceded to a deflection off Alan Lee’s calf.
“But we remain confident, once we can eradicate the sloppy spells of play, of picking up wins sooner rather than later.
“We just need a break or two to go for us.”
Williams made 39 appearances for QPR, scoring one goal.

Sharing a Club Peterborough Today Preview: Some Posh and Queens Park Rangers link men « Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryPublished Date: 11 September 2009 By Alan Swann COLIN Clarke's time at Posh gave no indication of the success he would go on to enjoy. The Northern Irish striker scored 22 goals in three indifferent seasons at London Road, but went on to enjoy a fine career at club and international level. In 1989 he moved from Southampton to QPR for £800,00 which was then a club record fee for the Londoners. He stayed at Loftus Road for just one season though scoring 11 times. Others to have played for both clubs include defenders Chris Plummer (left) and Steve Morrow. Plummer started his career at QPR, but made just 54 first-team appearances in eight years before moving to Barnet and then Posh for a £30,000 fee. Plummer made 56 appearances for Posh and scored the only goal of a win at local rivals Northampton. He now manages Peterborough Northern Star in United Counties League Division One. Morrow played 11 times for Posh on loan at the end of the 2000-01 season after spells at Arsenal and QPR. He was far more famous for breaking an arm after Tony Adams dropped him during some post Coca-Cola Cup celebrations. www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/Preview-Some-Posh-and-Queens.5638361.jp

Peterborough Official Site QPR v Posh: The Match Preview Posted on: Fri 11 Sep 2009 Peterborough United are back in Coca-Cola Championship action on Saturday when Darren Ferguson's men face Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road (3pm). Following last weekend's international break, Posh will be looking to register their first win of the league season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace last time out. TEAM NEWS Posh welcome back Chris Whelpdale to the squad for the first time this season following a hernia operation. Whelpdale, who scored in the reserve win over Northampton Town in mid-week, is in contention for a starting berth on the right hand side of midfield. Jamie Day is back in the squad after impressing in the second string, while midfielder Dean Keates is close to match fitness according to Ferguson, who also expressed his disappointment that Craig Morgan did not feature for Wales against Russia. 'When our players go away on international duty, it is disappointing when they do not feature, so I would have preferred Craig to play some part against Russia, but that is not my decision unfortunately,' Ferguson said. QPR welcome back Martin Rowlands to their squad after injury, but will be without the services of exciting midfielder Angelo Balanta who suffered a groin injury in training. Heidur Helguson is also a doubt. MANAGER QUOTES 'QPR are a club who will expect to beat us just like most Championship sides will expect to beat us when we go away from home. They have big financial backers and they have used the loan market very well in bringing in three Premier League players to the club. 'They also had a good win last time out so they will be confident. We know it is going to be tough again, but we have to use all that to our advantage. We will surprise anyone who takes us lightly and I know we are going to give QPR a really hard game,' Ferguson said. 'I have a very honest bunch of players who are responding well to what I want to achieve. We need to play with a lot more composure, but our first win will have done us a lot of good. We have as tough a game as any this weekend though as Peterborough are a decent side,' Magilton said. TICKET INFORMATION Supporters will be able to gain admission at Loftus Road on Saturday. Posh sold over 700 tickets in advance for the fixture. www.theposh.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10427~1793668,00.html
