Edit:
Forty-three years ago today: August 22, 1970, 19 year old goalie made his QPR debut.
Signed in the summer from Walsall by manager Les Allen, for 15,000 pounds, replacing Mike Kelly who was sold for the same fee, to Birmingham. (And I recall, somehow the little newspaper snippet when he signed "Strongly-tipped for England U-23 honours"
Parkes wasn't the goalie for the opening loss at Birmingham. But Parkes was in goal (replacing Alan Spratley) for the home opener, against Leicester.
Unfortunately QPR lost 1-3 (Venables penalty), but Parkes in that very first game looked pretty classy. QPR's team - Parkes - Clement Hazell Hunt Gillard - Venables Sibley Leach - Saul Bridges Marsh - Gerry Francis as sub.

I was there and remember it quite well.
It was a game of two goalkeepers. Parksy for QPR and Shilton for Leicester. Parksy had a great game and you could see he'd be our No:1 for years to come. However, Shilton had a game where it was nigh on impossible to score against him. We managed one, a penalty, but Shilton had a blinder.
After that game, Alan Spratley never got a look in at QPR and he subsequently went to Swindon and oblivion beyond that.
Parksy should have won more than his one solitary England cap and was better than anything we have playing for England today. His misfortune was to play in the same period as Shilton and Clemence. Not that Clemence was actually better, he wasn't, it's just that he played for Liverpool! How would Phil Neal have played for England otherwise?
Still, Parksy's signing was the start of a golden period in QPR history. Those were the days!

I was there too, and although I don't remember the details of the game, I am sure I still have the programme in my collection tucked away in a box in the garage somewhere

A good time to be 13, music, society, no political correctness, standing at football games with massive crowds.

Yes I can remember it well. Also it was before the match or the following home match I sat in my car with my father (when you could park the car near the ground!) and watched the fresh faced Phil walking to the ground looking like he had suddenly grown a few inches as his trousers were well short of his shoes! Great goalkeeper and probably the best I have seen (from 1959) prior to Kenny.

Remember it well. I agree that Parksy deserved better international recognition than he got.

I was likely at the game, but I cannot remember it at all. Mind you sometimes I forget what I did last week, but................then again I remember being at Wembley in 1967 when we won there!

I can remember turning up for the supporters coach one Saturday morning to go down to Bristol City I believe. This was the Saturday after Phil had played for England U-23's against Scotland U-23's on the Tuesday (think it was at Derby's ground). Unfortunately for Phil, he was beaten twice by a young man called Kenny Dalglsh as I recall.
These were the days when the coaches used to park in Ellerslie Road, and so did the players. I recall seeing big Phil getting out of his Hillman Hunter, and as a cheeky teenager I approached him, introducing myself as Dalglish. Think he gave me a friendly little clip round the ear (just as well it was friendly) and an autograph.
Top, top bloke and so unlucky that he was of the same generation of Shilton and Clemence, and along with most of the players of that era, always had time for a few words with the fans.

I was there, but my only memory is of being very impressed with our new goalkeeper.
We were poor at the start of that season & only Phil kept us afloat until Gordon Jago took over as manager.
The start of beautiful times!
