Sheffield Wednesday unveil plans for £22m Hillsborough faceliftSheffield Wednesday have unveiled plans for a £22 million redevelopment of their Hillsborough stadium. With the Owls keen to see the ground named as a potential host venue for the 2018 World Cup bid due to be submitted by the FA within the coming months, it has been revealed that both the Kop and the West stands are due to be revamped. By fitting a new roof structure on both stands, it is expected that the Hillsborough capacity will be boosted from its current level of 39,000 to around 45,000 by the end of 2013, with the work also serving to enhance the comfort of supporters. Unveiling the blueprints, Sheffield Wednesday chairman Lee Strafford said: "All fans would agree that Hillsborough is in need of investment and we are happy to present plans that will improve the fan experience, boost the club's revenue capabilities and also strengthen our ties with the local community." The plans also include the extension of the North Stand, with 17 new executive boxes to be supplemented by an education facility which will be used to host schools, adult learning centres and community groups. This comes soon after Mr Strafford rejected a football sponsorship deal believed to be worth in the region of £200,000, instead opting to give space on the team's shirts to the Sheffield Children's Hospital.
