Greg Abbott today revealed he is keeping tabs on former £2million man David Connolly as he continues his search for a new striker.
David ConnollyThe Blues boss, whose number two Dennis Booth was believed to be monitoring a target in Scotland on Saturday, has also spoken to ex-Republic of Ireland ace Connolly in recent weeks.
The 32-year-old, a former international and club team-mate of current Blues duo Graham Kavanagh and Ian Harte, has recently been on trial with QPR.
Abbott insisted he was not on the brink of a swoop for the ex-Wimbledon, Leicester and Sunderland star but admitted he was interested in the experienced frontman.
“We have been talking to David about his future on an informal basis,” said the United manager.
“He has had a long time out with injury and I’m not sure where he is at with that at the moment.
“He hasn’t necessarily come under scrutiny as a signing, but if he was to leave QPR and wanted to play some football, then we would certainly be interested in a player of his ability.
“It would be very expensive and David has had his injury problems, so it is one we have just discussed to see where he is at.”
Connolly was released by Sunderland at the end of last season after an injury-disrupted three-year spell with the Black Cats, when he managed 42 appearances and 13 goals. He did not make a single appearance last term.
Sunderland paid Wigan £1.4 million for his services in 2006, with the Latics having shelled out £2 million to sign him from Leicester the previous year.
He was at his most prolific whilst with Wimbledon from 2001-3, scoring 42 goals in 67 appearances. He has won 41 caps for Eire, scoring nine goals and played in the 2002 World Cup.
