Fiorentina’s fourth place finish in the 2008/09 Italian Serie A, meant that they were guaranteed an opportunity to qualify for this season’s UEFA Champions League, by securing a place in the play-off round of the competition.
The Viola will face the Portuguese outfit Sporting Clube de Portugal in a two-legged tie, which gets underway on August 18 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, before the return fixture in Florence on August 26.
The Italian club have announced their squad list for this particular phase of the competition, as well as the group stage, if of course they are to progress that far.
Unsurprisingly, the Viola’s two new signings in Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni have both been included in the squad. There were a few surprises though, as the club’s speedy winger Franco Semioli, as well as another of their new signings in Jose Castillo, both failed to make the cut.
Fiorentina squad: Avramov, Babacar, Comotto, Dainelli, Di Carmine, Donadel, Frey, Gamberini, Gilardino, Gobbi, Jorgensen, Jovetic, Kroldrup, Kuzmanovic, Marchionni, Montolivo, Mutu, Natali, Pasqual, Santana, Seculin, Vargas , C. Zanetti
