Haverhill Rovers Match Report from yesterday HAVERHILL ROVERS 1-1 DEREHAM TOWN Haverhill started their 2009/10 campaign with a point against their Norfolk opponents, their goal through the debuting Stuart Wardley moments before the break cancelled out by Stuart Williams just past the hour mark. Marcus Hunt came to the home side's aid to stop Paul Atkins' effort on the goal line from going in, the same Dereham striker breaking the offside trap before hitting the outside of the near post with a further effort. Wardley's goal came right on the stroke of half time after Louis Harper's cross from the right, the ball coming to Wardley before he allowed it to find his head, loop over goalkeeper John Higgs and into the far side of the net. Williams' equaliser came after 62 minutes following Nicholas Howell's chip into the box, Williams getting ahead of home 'keeper Dave Walton to poke the ball home. Injury time saw good chances for both sides to triple their point haul, Higgs stopping substitute Shaun Banham's effort after he weaved past four defenders as well as Wardley's follow up, Adam Smith squaring the ball to fellow replacement Robbie Harris, whose shot was parried at the near post by Walton. YES Haverhill Echo/Derek Bish Former QPR striker Wardley nets on debut Former professional Stuart Wardley is mobbed by his new team-mates after scoring the opener on his debut for the Reds. Picture by Ben Carmichael H0908-20-014 Haverhill Rovers 1 (Wardley 45) Dereham Town 1 (Beaumont 62) By Derek Bish at Hamlet Croft HAVERHILL Rovers took no time at all to banish the memories of last season as they put in a top drawer performance against a Dereham Town side expected to challenge for honours this season. The pre-match excitement was dominated by the news of Rovers’ signing of ex-QPR striker Stuart Wardley and he didn’t disappoint, heading the Reds into a first half lead. However, Dereham responded strongly and levelled the match just after the hour mark before a frenetic ending saw both goalkeepers excel in keeping the score at 1-1. Returning Rovers goalkeeper Dave Walton had to save one-on-one from Dereham’s Danny Beaumont in the 13th minute, with captain Marcus Hunt making a fantastic sliding tackle on the line from the follow-up. In response, Louis Harper forced John Higgs into a sharp save above his head but Town’s Paul Atkins went closest by striking the outside of the post. The Reds soon began to gain a foothold in the game and they took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Harper drove a pin-point cross from the right onto Wardley’s head at the far post, and the ex-Championship ace showed his prowess in guiding the ball back over Higgs into the right-hand side of the net. Dereham started the second-half as strongly as they had the first with Beaumont forcing Walton into another good one-on-one save before the home custodian lost a challenge for a right-wing cross with two Dereham players, one of whom was Beaumont, who claimed his side’s opening strike of the campaign. Haverhill didn’t let their heads drop and dominated the rest of the game, Salmons missing their best chance when one-on-one with Higgs. There was controversy with nine minutes left after substitute Shaun Banham was denied a goal for handball, an offence he only seemed to commit after being bundled to the ground in the penalty area. But the striker nearly got a superb last-minute winner, jinking his way into the box past several defenders before forcing a good parry out of Higgs, who had to react quickly to throw himself in front of Wardley’s follow-up. Dereham nearly nicked it themselves less than a minute later but Walton made a great reaction block to deny Robbie Harris from close range before the referee brought an end to a pulsating second-half. ECHO MAN OF THE MATCH: Stuart Kingham. ROVERS (4-1-4-1): Walton; P Abbott, Holmes, Hunt (c), Shipton; Kingham; Wilby (Halls 58), Challis, Harper, Salmons (Banham 76); Wardley. Haverhill Echo/Derek Bish Reds are hoping Stuart will stayHAVERHILL Rovers manager Peter Betts is hoping to convince former Queens Park Rangers striker Stuart Wardley to stay on for the rest of the season, after the 35-year-old frontman starred in his opening two games for the club. As revealed in last week's Echo, Betts was on the trail of the ex-Championship ace, who scored on his debut on Saturday, before putting in a man-of-the-match showing against Wivenhoe on Tuesday night. Wardley is at Hamlet Croft for an initial month, but Betts would love to make it a longer stay, should Wardley enjoy his time in a red shirt. www.haverhillecho.co.uk/sport/Reds-are-hoping-Stuart-will.5546811.jp
