TRIBUNAL DECISION REACHED
Posted on: Thu 06 Aug 2009
Carlisle United are to receive an initial £200,000 from Watford for the transfer of striker Danny Graham, it was announced this afternoon.
A Football League transfer tribunal decided that the Blues would also receive up to £150,000 on top of this for their former centre-forward, depending on the number of appearances Graham makes for Watford this season or beyond.
In addition, United will receive £200,000 if the Hornets are promoted to the Premier League in the next three seasons.
The Blues will also be receive 15% from any sell-on of the player by Watford, who had joined Carlisle from Middlesbrough on a free transfer.
Carlisle United directors and co-owners John Nixon and Steven Pattison had attended this afternoon's transfer tribunal, along with first team manager Greg Abbott. They successfully put forward the club's case, having dismissed Watford's offer of just £25,000 for the Blues' top scorer last season.
Chief executive David Allen said everyone at Carlisle United was delighted with the deal the club will receive for Graham, who will be 24 next Wednesday. The package could ultimately total £550,000, excluding any sell-on transfer fee.
David said: "We are absolutely chuffed to bits. This is a really good result for us. It was Carlisle United who took the chance on signing Danny when Middlesbrough were prepared to let him go and it was also this club who developed and transformed his career into what it is now.
"Watford's offer of £25,000 was totally derisory and we made it perfectly clear that we would not be messed around in this way. We are now thrilled that the transfer tribunal's decision was to award us a package that is a much truer reflection of the player's real value.
"We had offered Danny a very handsome wage rise to stay here but he chose to exercise his right move on. He leaves our fans with some great memories of the goals he scored, even though they dried up for him back in January."
On top of the initial £200,000, Carlisle will receive £30,000 for every 15 appearances Graham makes for Watford, up to 75 appearances. This equals a maximum of £150,000 on apearance money.
But David stressed that while the club remain in the hunt to sign a new striker, the money from Graham's transfer would not immediately be availabale to splash out on one new arrival. He added: "It has been well-documented that we are looking to bring in a fourth senior striker to the club. There has always been money available to do that and that is still the case.
"However, it would be wrong to assume that the money we receive from the transfer of Danny Graham will go straight towards those funds. The club has many other financial commitments to make as well.
"And signing players is not always simply just about money. We have lost out on a number of specific strikers this summer because they have chosen to go to clubs who offer them a higher level of football."
