4 Years Ago: Insane "Dowie Out" Rumours

From three years ago: 2008:

QPR "In The Knows" Categorically Deny Dowie Departing Rumour
-
Messageboard rumours that Ian Dowie was leaving QPR were rife today on the messageboard today. The rumours were strongly and unequivocally denied by those supposedly in the know, including former Director - and still legal counsel, Nico De Marco.

The Times Iain Dowie heads for exit door after QPR row - Gary Jacob

Iain Dowie was on the verge of being dismissed as manager of Queens Park Rangers last night after an argument with Flavio Briatore, the club’s Italian co-owner. Dowie, who was appointed only three months ago by the Coca-Cola Championship club, clashed yesterday with the Renault Formula One team principal about the proposed transfer of an unknown striker from the Middle East.

Briatore is understood to have told Dowie that he would be dismissed, but stopped short of formalising the decision and it was unclear whether the manager would report for work this morning. Some of the club’s hierarchy have been given the task of finding a successor, should the differences not be resolved, but this looks unlikely before the club’s first Championship match of the season, at home to Barnsley on Saturday. The club’s list of targets is likely to include Sam Allardyce and Mike Newell. There are no obvious internal candidates.

Briatore and Dowie have had disagreements about transfers this summer. The club spent £250,000 to sign Kaspars Gorkss from Blackpool, while three players arrived on free transfers and two on loan. Dowie dismissed the reported row as “rumours” last night.

Dowie was appointed as the successor to Luigi De Canio because it was felt that he had the credentials to lead the club to promotion. However, the appointment was not backed unanimously at Loftus Road.

Many of QPR’s problems in recent years have stemmed from a £10 million debt to the ABC Corporation, a company registered in Panama, which provided a loan that helped the club to exit administration six years ago. The 10 per cent interest payments have been a considerable burden and QPR’s owners yesterday lent the club £10 million to repay ABC, with the money repayable to them in two years’ time and with 8.5 per cent interest payments. Nico De Marco Dowie Denial - Posted on Couple QPR Messageboards

People know me and my close relationship to the Board.

For that reason, I hardly ever post on message boards anymore.

But it is important enough to do so tonight. For some reason a "silly season" rumour has gone around claiming Ian Dowie has been/is being sacked. I can confirm there is no truth whatsoever in this rumour. Dowie is manager, the Board has full confidence in him, and the players are excited about the beginning of the season.

Unfortunately press have already been picking up this rumour and it can be distracting in the days running up to our first game. If there was any truth in this particular rumour then fair enough. But there isn't. It would be in the Club's interest, and all of our interests as supporters, if we got back to getting ready for the first game. Under Ian Dowie.

I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday.

Nick De Marco

And more stories the following day: A Year ago today

UPDATED: This is London
Dowie's future at QPR unclear following bust-up with Flavio Briatore

Iain Dowie's long-term future as Queens Park Rangers manager remains in serious doubt following his row with chairman Flavio Briatore.

It is expected that Dowie will be in charge for Rangers' opening game of the season against Barnsley on Saturday but the club are believed to be searching for a replacement in case Briatore and Dowie are unable to hammer out their differences.

Dowie - who has been in charge for just 85 days - today claimed that reports he was about to be sacked were 'hogwash' and 'a load of rubbish' but he declined to confirm categorically that he would still be in charge on Saturday.

Rangers also sought to play down the rumours, insisting it was 'business as normal', but it is understood there has been tension between Dowie and the club's top brass since he took the reins on May 14 following the sacking of Luigi De Canio six days earlier.

The club's underwhelming pre-season has not helped. Briatore is said to have been less than impressed by Rangers' progress in a summer campaign which culminated in Dowie's team being defeated 2-1 by Italian club Chievo in a friendly at Loftus Road last Saturday.

Dowie is believed to be keen to bring his elder brother, Bob, to Loftus Road after the pair worked together at Crystal Palace between 2003 and 2006, when Bob was director of football and largely responsible for transfer negotiations.

He was also a member of his younger brother's backroom team, working as chief scout, when Dowie was in charge at Coventry, but Bob has yet to move to Rangers -
although fitness coach John Harbin and assistant manager Tim Flowers followed Dowie to Loftus Road from the Ricoh Arena.

Even though Dowie continues to insist that the summer signings are his and his alone, it is believed that Briatore and former chairman Gianni Paladini, who now has the title of sporting director, have been the driving force behind the majority of them.

Italian midfielder Matteo Alberti was signed from Chievo eight days before Dowie was confirmed as manager, while his compatriot Samuel Di Carmine - on a season-long loan from Fiorentina - was recommended to Rangers by former coach De Canio.

In Italian sporting culture, a football coach often has little to do with buying and selling players and is expected simply to focus on training and tactics, while the club hierarchy control transfer policy.

De Canio was happy to play by these rules during his seven months at Loftus Road, leaving Paladini to do the wheeling and dealing.

But Dowie insisted at his first press conference that he would be the one responsible for identifying transfer targets - and it is understood he is unhappy at not being given the sole say over which players are bought.

He remains keen to sign Ben Watson from Palace and Rangers had a £1.75million bid for the 23-year-old midfielder rejected last month.

But the chances of Watson moving across London appear to have decreased after Briatore persuaded Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon to allow Rangers to sign Madrid's 19-year-old midfield prodigy Dani Parejo on a season-long loan deal.

Ever since he took charge at QPR, the extent of Dowie's influence at the club has been the subject of frequent speculation.

The 43-year-old did superbly to lead Crystal Palace to promotion in 2004, but subsequent sackings by Charlton and Coventry saw his stock fall dramatically.

There has even been talk that Dowie will be handed a £1m pay-off and replaced by a more high-profile boss should he take Rangers into the Premier League - something the former West Ham striker insists has never been mentioned to him."This is London

QPR have dismissed reports claiming boss Iain Dowie is on the verge of being sacked following a row with the club's hierarchy.
Rumours have emerged that Dowie, who was only appointed in May, had clashed with co-owner Flavio Briatore over the recruitment policy at Loftus Road.
But the club have responded to the speculation by insisting there is "categorically no truth in the rumours", with Dowie set to take training on Thursday as normal - the squad have a day off today.
Briatore's clout in the transfer market has been evident this summer with the likes of Real Madrid starlet Daniel Parejo, Argentinian youngster Emmanuel Jorge Ledesma and Italian playmaker Samuel di Carmine arriving on loan deals.

Dowie has also signed Blackpool defender Kaspars Gorkss for £250,000, and secured the return of winger Lee Cook on loan from Fulham.

The Times' "Dowie close to sack" story (unequivocally denied by those "close to" QPR) is noted by BBC Gossip "QPR manager Iain Dowie is on the verge of being sacked after a row with owner Flavio Briatore over the proposed transfer of an unnamed player from the Middle East. (The Times)"

By Sportsmail Reporter -Strained: Dowie could be leaving
QPR manager Iain Dowie was facing the sack last night after falling out with the club's co-owner Flavio Briatore.
Dowie, who arrived at Loftus Road three months ago, clashed with the Italian about the proposed transfer of an unknown striker from the Middle East, according to The Times.
Renault Formula One team principal Briatore is believed to have told Dowie that he would be dismissed, but stopped short of formalising the decision.
It was unclear whether Dowie would report for work on Wednesday morning and some of the club’s hierarchy have been given the task of finding a successor, should the differences not be resolved. Mail

Guardian Snippet by Tom Bryant (in Gossip piece) re Dowie/QPR (presumably just based on The Times:
"...And in the storm drains around QPR there's room for one man with a hole in the back of his head: expect Iain Dowie to fill it soon after falling out with boss Flavio Briatore over the transfer of an unknown Middle Eastern striker." Guardian

Bump another year. Crazy media. Our Club wouldn't dismiss a manager after such a short period of time!
