CLEM IS FIRST CHOICE
Posted on: Thu 30 Jul 2009
Having initially stepped up to first team level on a temporary basis, Paul Clement is delighted to have had his role made permanent under Carlo Ancelotti.
The 36-year-old began working with the squad with Guus Hiddink and Ray Wilkins, following the dismissal of Luiz Felipe Scolari in February, combining the role with that of reserve team manager, which he has now relinquished.
It means Ancelotti's staff has now been formally completed after the arrival of Bruno Demichelis, with Clement adding a further home-grown element to the setup, as well as providing continuity behind the scenes.
'Clem' has now been with the club for three years in his current stint, after starting as Under 16s manager in 2006. He was appointed youth team coach a year later before taking over as reserve team boss following Brendan Rodgers' departure last November. Previously, he had worked as a part-time coach for the Under 15s, as long ago as 1994.
Chelseafc.com caught a few words with Paul to find his thoughts on the situation.
You must be pleased to have things sorted…
'I'm really pleased with the appointment and excited by the challenge as well. I have been here three years now and never would have anticipated in that period of time that I would have gone from Under 16 coach to youth team, reserves and now first team, but it is a fantastic opportunity and a real privilege to do it at a top club like this.'
And it is a fantastic learning opportunity…
'The experience I have had in the last six months has been awesome and I just want to keep it going now.
'I have learned a massive amount, every day I am learning things and I tend to jot a lot of things down so I can look back and think what a privileged learning experience it has been.'
What will your role be?
'From day to day I will be assisting training on the pitch and everything to do with the session. I am not sure how it will progress beyond that but I am there to assist the manager as needs be.
And it's good to have been promoted from within…
'I think it's good for the players to see that the club wants to promote from within and it's good for the staff as well that are already in the system, so it's a very positive thing.
'I've always kept an open mind to things, I don't necessarily have an absolute goal in terms of continuing as a first team coach or being a manager in my own right, I am not sure but I just keep cracking away every day, which I think has helped me, and we will see what happens.
And how was your experience of being on tour with the first team?
'We had a really good time travelling around a lot, but a few of us are still struggling with the jet lag. It was good to play in the lovely stadiums with big crowds and it was great and showed just how big Chelsea are worldwide now, and they were high level games with four great wins.'
Clement also talks to Chelsea TV in tonight's Blues News at 6.30pm before Alec Stewart joins Jason Cundy in the studios to talk about all things Blue in Live From Stamford Bridge at 7pm.
As the sporting media focuses on the Ashes, what better time to speak to one of Chelsea's biggest celebrity fans and England cricket legend Stewart, who offers his opinions on the pre-season tour, Chelsea's new arrivals, his expectations for the season and the starting XI he'd pick for Hull.
