FURLONG SIGNS ON THE DOTTED LINE
Posted on: Mon 03 Aug 2009
Paul Furlong, the 40-year-old man of many clubs whose nine goals in 21 games while on loan last season helped Barnet preserve their League 2 status, has signed a one year deal.
"A great capture for us", said manager Ian Hendon, who revealed that Furlong would have an additional role as a strikers' coach.
Hendon has urged patience from supporters as Furlong has trained with the Bees since the beginning of July and has played (and scored) in pre-season games.
"He wanted to do a pre-season after leaving Southend to prove that he was up to doing another year as a League player", said the manager, three years his striker's junior. " I always said he could and he came through flying.
"I'd like to thank Paul for his utmost honesty with me. He promised to sign for Barnet ... he made it clear to me that he wasn't going anywhere else, although other clubs were interested in him, even at League 1 level.
"Paul has so much to offer and we are delighted to have someone around of his calibre. He is coming onto the coaching side but has signed first and foremost as a player".
Furlong signed from August 1 and the paperwork was sent to the Football League headquarters at Preston today.
He said: "Ian Hendon, Lee Harrison, Gary Breen and Mark Stein have sold the club to me. I was in the wilderness at Southend at the start of the year when Barnet came in and gave me a chance of first team football and to show I can still score goals.
"I am grateful for that and hope to further repay the club this season. I have a wealth of experience as a striker and hope to be able to pass on some of that knowledge to the younger lads".
Furlong, who scored his 200th senior goal playing for the Bees, started at Enfield for five years in 1986 and has topped 500 games in an 18-year League career with Coventry City, Watford, Chelsea, QPR, Luton Town and Southend United. He celebrated his 200th goal in a game at Underhill against Luton by laying down and saluting his shirt.
