Notts County 2 v 1 Nottingham Forest
Sat 25 Jul 2009
Nottingham Forest made the short trip across the Trent for their final away game of the pre-season against Notts County.
But Forest, with all their summer signings, were unable to get an advantage over the League Two side, who undoubtedly made their new Director of Football happy with the win.
The first half was goalless, but after a slow start Forest looked by far the better side, with Lee Camp not having to make any significant saves.
But it was County who took the lead ten minutes into the second half and doubled it on the hour mark.
A quadruple substitution put life into the Forest side and they got one goal back but were unable to find the back of the net again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The start was delayed due to the large number of County fans waiting to get in, eager to catch a glimpse of Sven-Goran Eriksson, but the players finally emerged, with Paul McKenna leading the Forest side out as captain.
There were no fewer than five past Forest players named in the County squad while three Forest players - Wes Morgan, Kelvin Wilson and David McGoldrick - started their football careers at Notts County.
With Billy Davies deciding to go with Dele Adebola and Robert Earnshaw up front, Nathan Tyson had to be satisfied with playing on the left of midfield.
It was a fairly scrappy first 20 minutes, although Adebola looked impressive up front, and the first shot of the game came from Radoslaw Majewski in the 25th minute.
Two minutes later Forest created some good football when Adebola put the ball through to Earnshaw, whose shot from 12 yards out produced a good save by Russell Hoult.
Earnshaw turned provider when he intercepted the ball to put it through to Tyson, but it was a poor finish.
Adebola produced more good work when he set up Earnshaw, but he shot over the bar.
And Earnshaw was wide with a good effort five minutes from time after Adebola and Majewski linked up well to create the chance.
Wilson went off injured with an ankle problem just before half time and was replaced after the break by Luke Chambers.
County came close to taking the lead early in the second half when Luke Rodgers, who had only just come on, got away from Joel Lynch and fired in a shot. The ball came back off Lee Camp's upright, but luckily for Forest there was nobody to follow it up.
The home side took the lead ten minutes into the second half. When Morgan slipped, Rodgers found himself with just Lee Camp to beat and confidently put the ball past the Forest keeper.
And Lee Hughes made it two on the hour mark when poor defending by Forest let Craig Westcarr get on the end of the ball. His great effort in found Hughes, who planted his header past Camp from just five yards out.
Forest made no less than four changes five minutes later, bringing on McGoldrick, Dexter Blackstock, Paul Anderson and Aaron Mitchell.
Blackstock had a half chance within minutes of coming on but his finish was poor and substitute keeper Kevin Pilkington dealt with it easily.
A great strike from Lewis McGugan gave Forest a goal back. It looked like being a comfortable save for Pilkington, but he somehow managed to palm the ball into the back of the net.
And they had another chance following a great break, but Blackstock's shot flashed across the face of goal before McGoldrick could get on the end of it.
Forest worked hard at getting an equalizer but it wasn't to be and the packed County Ground erupted on the final whistle.
