Mirror/Derek Mcgovern Managers on their marks for sack race
Premier League clubs are spending so much money it's as if they don't know what the credit crunch is. I overheard one manager this week appealing to refs to clamp down on it because it could end careers.
Indeed, it has gone largely unreported how Manchester City last week bid £2billion for the Premier League title.
But the spend, spend, spend summer has put added pressure on bosses in the top flight and bookies are expecting a sack, sack, sack autumn and winter.
Hills have opened a book on how many of the 20 will get the boot from now until the end of the season and go just 11-4 for seven or more.
That seems a terribly pessimistic interpretation of what's in store until you consider names such as Alex McLeish, Paul Hart, Phil Brown and Arsene Wenger.
McLeish is 5-1 favourite to be axed first, which is really unkind. He's Birmingham boss - hasn't he suffered enough? Mark Hughes is 11-2 joint second favourite, bookies clearly believing the bigspending Manchester City boss will be getting marching orders before he fills out all those standing orders.
Sack Race (Hills): 5-1 A McLeish, 11-2 P Hart, M Hughes, 7-1 P Brown, 12-1 C Ancelotti, 16 O Coyle, G Megson, G Zola, M McCarthy, R Martinez, 20-1 bar.
