Diego Maradona is being lined up by Portsmouth for a sensational move to the Premier League.
The club’s new owner, Sulaiman Al Fahim, wants Maradona to quit his job as Argentina boss to become Portsmouth’s ‘global ambassador’.
Dubai-based billionaire Al Fahim, who this week completed his £60m takeover at Fratton Park, believes Maradona will help attract world superstars to the south coast.
Amazingly, the Argentine legend’s lawyer, Angel Oscar Moyano, claims Maradona is interested in becoming part of Al Fahim’s revolution.
Moyano said: “He has got top players ready and he is even ready to leave the Argentine national team.
“He wants to build a strong team for which he offers his mediation for signing players of top level, who with the support of Diego will be willing to come to Portsmouth.”
Al Fahim is a close friend of the footballer’s cousin, Remigio Maradona, and both men are goodwill ambassadors for the United Nations.
Property tycoon Al Fahim even plans to open a Maradona Sports Cafe in the United Arab Emirates next year.Speaking before his arrival at Pompey, Al Fahim said: “I do not know if Maradona is a good coach.
“What I think is that he should be president of a club and have the right to buy and choose players.
“At Napoli he started from scratch and built a club. He has the power to transform football teams.”
Maradona only took charge of Argentina in October 2008 but he has suffered some disappointing results, including a humiliating 6-1 defeat in Bolivia.
Al Fahim has given Paul Hart a two-year contract as manager at Fratton Park but the former Nottingham Forest boss is said to be willing to work alongside Maradona.
A Portsmouth spokesperson yesterday said that the club could not make any further comment while Maradona
was still employed by Argentina.
