Northampton kick-off over Motherwell swoop for Coke
23.07.09 | Ian Ferris
Motherwell have announced the signing of Giles Coke from Northampton Town after the 23 year old rejected the offer of a new contract at Sixfields.
Well boss Jim Gannon, said: "I am absolutely delighted to have Giles on board.
"He's an excellent athlete, has good stature, good athleticism with the ability to get round the pitch and he's equally adept with both feet. I see him being able to play any of our midfield roles but he particularly likes the attacking side of the game. Going forward, he'll be a fantastic addition to our squad.
"I've tracked him for quite a while back to his Mansfield days when a lot of big clubs were following him. He did well at Northampton even although the team struggled a little bit and with them going down, he's taken the opportunity to come and play in the SPL.
"I also think he's yet to reach anything like his full potential. He's perhaps played in sides that have struggled and that has brought him down but hopefully here, playing in a side that will attempt to play good football, he can flourish.
"We're still working away at getting more faces in - this won't be the last by any matter of means. We're looking at least four new permanent signings and four new loan deals before the new season kicks off in August. We need strength and depth all over the park - we know the areas that need urgent attention and as we bring guys in the squad will start to take shape."
Meanwhile, Northampton are unhappy as they would have liked compensation for Coke - who is under 24, but because a move to Scotland is classed as a 'cross border' move by Fifa - it appears unlikely they will get any financial settlement.
A Northampton statement said: "Giles Coke has now travelled to Motherwell and has signed a contract, which the club is disappointed to learn.
"Northampton Town do not accept this course of events and, in view of the unusual circumstances, we have sought advice from professional bodies to determine whether compensation is due.
"The club are very disappointed at how things have transpired, having acted in all good faith to support the player and offer terms that were deemed acceptable by the player and confirmed by the agent, whom the player has a binding representation agreement with.
"We are unable to comment further until the legal process has been completed."
