Young Lions denied by late Swiss strike

Joe Mattock's strike cancelled out in second half stoppage time in Donetsk.

England U19s kicked off their Euro 2009 campaign on Tuesday evening, but were denied victory by a late stoppage time goal by Switzerland.

On a warm and pleasant evening in Donetsk, the Young Lions were desperately unlucky not to get off to the winning start that Head Coach Brian Eastick had hoped for after Joe Mattock’s free kick had seen them in front for the majority of the game, only for a goal in injury time seeing the Swiss draw level for what seemed an unlikely point.

It was a game England largely controlled in terms of possession and creativity, but with just a one goal lead to protect, there was always a danger and the Young Lions were made to pay in the cruellest fashion.

While Switzerland never really created any clear opportunities, they were a constant threat from set pieces and threw everything at the Lions in the last ten minutes and it was from a dead ball that they drew level

England certainly started the game well, enjoying some good early possession with Nile Ranger proving a handful for the Swiss defence in particular, winning a corner in the third minute after his earlier shot had been blocked in the area.

Aside from that though, the game was largely tight and controlled until Mattock’s free kick from the right forced Swiss goalkeeper Oliver Klaus into a desperate punch away in the 21st minute, after Kyle Walker had been fouled following a strong run down the right.

It was a set piece which saw England take the lead too, when Ranger was fouled on the edge of the area whilst challenging for an aerial ball. The Swiss weren’t happy about the decision, but Mattock showed no mercy and struck a low shot into the bottom corner to put the Young Lions ahead.

With no changes made by either team at the break, England continued in the second half where they had left off in the first by attacking the Swiss.

A flowing move in the 52nd minute which involved Mattock, Dan Gosling and Matthew James eventually saw the ball worked to Danny Welbeck in the area but after skilfully beating Michael Lang, he just ran out of room and the ball drifted out of play.

England still had to be wary of the Swiss threat though and Gavin Hoyte had to make a finely timed tackle in the area to nick the ball away from big striker Orhan Mustafi, who had proved a physical threat throughout the game.

The Swiss were forced to scramble the ball clear from their six yard area just shy of the hour mark when Henri Lansbury’s corner was knocked down towards Ranger. It just wouldn’t drop for the big striker though and that allowed Switzerland chance to clear.

Welbeck came agonisingly close to adding a second goal in the 65th minute when a quickly taken free kick and pass from Lansbury sent him clear into the box. He clipped a neat shot over Klaus and it was heading for the far corner, until Francois Affolter somehow stretched out a foot to clear it off the line and wide of the post.

A great counter attacking move from England a few minutes later saw James and Welbeck trade passes in the centre circle before the latter picked out Lansbury on the right. His centre went back to Welbeck, before Ranger got in on the act only to find himself outcrowded in the area and dispossessed.

Switzerland were still looking dangerous though, particularly from set pieces with captain Daniel Unal knocking one dangerous ball into the centre which fortunately drifted behind the goal and a corner soon after that was glanced narrowly wide of the far post by Fabio Daprela.

Captain Jason Steele was then forced into a brave block in the area, as Switzerland continued to press for an equaliser.

Steele was to be beaten though, in the first minute of stoppage time when Swiss midfielder Sebastien Wutrich smashed a low free kick from 30 yards past the England keeper and into the corner of the net.

The Young Lions are next in action when they take on hosts Ukraine on Friday, at Shakhtar Donetsk’s Olimpiyski Stadium.

U19s Head Coach felt that Friday's scoreline was probably the right result.

After the excitement and nail-biting end to Friday’s game with Ukraine, Head Coach Brian Eastick felt a point was probably the right result.

The Young Lions had conceded an early goal which gave them a mountain to climb, but they more than did that by storming back into the lead and then having opportunities to extend that.

However, the hosts struck back and went on to finish the game strongly, backed by a vociferous home crowd desperate to cheer them on to victory.

“It was probably the right result in the end,” admitted Eastick after the game.

“We made the worst possible start to the game, which was disappointing because I told them to expect a fast start from Ukraine but I think they were still in the dressing room when Ukraine scored.

“After that though, I thought we played some really good football going forward and we deserved to get the equaliser.

“I thought when we went 2-1 up, we could possibly go on and win the game when we had two decent chances to get a third goal but it just wouldn’t go in.

“But in the end I think Ukraine will be disappointed they didn’t win the match too because we tired in the last 15 minutes of the match and they had chances.

“Once the game went to 2-2, I don’t think we managed the game very well, but I think over the 90 minutes, 2-2 was the best result.”

With the Ukrainian season just at its end and the English one just about to start, the fitness of the players played a big part in the game, but Eastick feels his squad are growing nearer to their peak level.

“Our players are still only midway into pre-season, so were always going to tire,” he added.

“But we’re getting fitter and fitter by the day and I think our performance tonight was much better than against Switzerland in the first game.”

Eastick also reserved special praise for his defence, which had something of a makeshift look to it following the withdrawal of several players from his initial squad and standby list.

“Out of the defence that played, we had Kyle Walker, who is normally a right-back and Matthew Briggs, who is only 18 and is normally a left-back, playing in central defence,” he explained.

“We’ve had to do that because out of the original squad of 30 that we gave to UEFA we had four central defenders in there but they have been taken out of the squad for whatever reason.

“It’s a problem we’ve had to deal with and it’s not an excuse, it’s just a fact.”

The result leaves England knowing that any sort of victory in their final game with Slovenia on Monday will be enough to see them into the semi-finals and Eastick admits he isn’t surprised that it’s gone down to the last game.

“The group has gone down to the wire as I thought it would do,” he said.

“We need to win our last game and so do Ukraine so there is everything to play for and hopefully we can get three points and move on to the semi-final.”

Henri Lansbury and Dan Gosling scored as England U19s were held to another draw.

England had to settle for a second successive point in the European U19 Championship finals on Friday evening, when they played out a tough and fierce 2-2 draw with host nation Ukraine in Donetsk.

It was a game that really could've gone either way, but the Young Lions showed their grit and character to see off some serious pressure in the second half and also come from behind to take a second half lead after conceding an early goal.

Ukraine hit back with an equaliser though and the result was perhaps fair in the end, with England also having their chances to win and it now means they will have to wait until Monday's final Group A game with Slovenia before finding out if they are to reach the semi-final.

Ukraine made the perfect start and were ahead within two minutes after starting the game quickly. A move down the right saw Dmytro Ieremenko cut a ball back from the by-line and when striker Sergii Shevchuk knocked it back to the edge of the area, skipper Kyrylo Petrov made no mistake by placing a low shot into the bottom corner.

The lead could’ve been doubled in the 10th minute when Matthew James’ ball across defence was intercepted by Denys Garmash who then set up Dmytro Korkishko, but his shot was well saved by Jason Steele as England looked to get themselves going.

They did just that though, playing some neat and incisive football in the midfield and the game turned back England’s way in the 24th minute, when a Ukrainian goalkeeper Igor Levcheko dallied with a back pass allowing Danny Welbeck the chance to nick it off him, before Levchenko hauled down the forward

A penalty was awarded, Levchenko was booked by the referee and Henri Lansbury stepped up to place a low shot into the bottom corner of the goal and bring the Young Lions back level.

It was just what England had needed after battling their way back into the game and enjoying more possession as well as looking more dangerous in the final third.

Nile Ranger then got on the end of a Gavin Hoyte cross from the right on the half hour mark, but under tight scrutiny from his marker, his glanced header went just over.

A foul on Welbeck on the left then provided Joe Mattock with a chance to cross, with Ranger again proving the target but again, the home side desperately scrambled clear.

Steele was forced into a good save under pressure in the 42nd minute, when Shevchuk curled a free-kick into the danger zone from the left, but the skipper was equal to it and palmed it away and behind for a corner.

With half time approaching, Matthew Briggs embarked on a purposeful run forward form the back and skipped past three Ukrainian challenges in the process before seeing his powerful low shot well saved by Levchenko.

Just over five minutes after the re-start and England were in front. A well thought out and quickly taken free-kick from Danny Drinkwater 30 yards from goal picked out the run of Dan Gosling, and he showed great composure to fire home a low shot from inside the area and put the Lions ahead.

England went looking for a third goal and were unfortunate not to get one in the 58th minute. A fine run forward from Mattock led to the initial opening, when he picked out Gosling on the left whose centre almost led to a chance for Welbeck, at the expense of a corner.

When Ukraine didn’t fully clear Lansbury’s flag kick, the ball dropped to Drinkwater in the area. He managed to turn a shot at goal, only for a combination of Levchenko and Ieremenko to scramble it away from danger.

The home side found themselves back level in the 61st minute though, when it was England’s turn to fully clear a corner and when Bogdan Butko played a delicious cross into the area, Petrov was there again to head home and send the crowd into raptures.

With the support galvanised, Ukraine were looking for a third and they almost had it when Petrov sent a shot sizzling narrowly over the bar. series of dangerous corners from Korkishko followed, with England being forced to defend for their lives to stay on level terms.

They had Steele to thank for that too, as he made a fine double save in the 68th minute, first to deny Ieremenko’s angled shot and then the follow up from substitute Vitally Kaverin.

Steele had to be alert again in the 76th minute when Korkishko tried his luck with a low left footer after cutting in from the right, but again the Middlesbrough man was equal to it and saved comfortably to his left.

With the game into the last ten minutes, Mattock tested Levchenko with a well placed free-kick, but the home keeper was well placed to make a simple save.

A tiring England were almost caught out by a quickly taken throw-in on the left, but substitute Artur Kamoza fired into the side netting from a tight angle, but the Young Lions were really let off the hook by Korkishko who missed the best chance of the game when he fired wide after breaking clear from just inside the England half.

That should have wrapped it up for Ukraine, but they too had to settle for a point and it will all have to be decided on Monday as to who reaches the last four with England knowing that victory over Slovenia will see them into the semi-finals.

England cruise into Euro semi-final

7-1 win for Young Lions sets new Euro record.

England sealed their place in the semi-final of the European U19 Championships in some style, with a convincing win and a record scoreline at this age group against Group A rivals Slovenia.

The Young Lions knew that a win of any description would be enough to seal their place in the last four but a clinical first half display blew any doubts out of the window as five goals, followed by two more in the second half and all stunningly dispatched, blew away a Slovenia side who still had a chance of progression themselves with a victory.

Henri Lansbury started the rout and then played a key role in the first hour by setting up the next two goals for Matthew Briggs and Danny Welbeck in what was a fine performance from the Arsenal midfielder. It was a decent all-round team display from Brian Eastick’s side though and they will now head into Thursday's semi-final against France with confidence.

Ironically, it was Slovenia who had the first chance of the game in the seventh minute as Armend Spreco collected a loose ball 25 yards from and traded passes with skipper Rajko Rep to break into the box. He tried to slide a low shot home, but Jason Steele was out bravely and quickly to make a good save.

They were made to pay for that miss too, as England took a 10th minute lead with a fine goal. The move started on the right with Kieran Trippier, who intercepted well before advancing forward and then switching the play to Nathan Delfouneso on the left. He tricked his way inside before playing a pass into the area. Welbeck flicked it back to Lansbury and he crashed home a stunning shot into the top corner.

England capitalised on their good start to the game and doubled their lead in the 19th minute. The Young Lions won a free-kick on the right following a foul on Delfouneso and when Slovenia goalkeeper Matej Radan got nowhere near Lansbury’s free-kick, Matthew Briggs was there at the far post to head home and put his side in firm control.

Slovenia still had to be watched though and they missed a fabulous chance to pull one back when defender Anel Omerovic headed wide from close range when connecting with Rep’s corner.

Again, England made them pay and within a minute Welbeck had made it 3-0 after collecting a pass from Lansbury and breaking clear into the area. Radan came storming out but the striker calmly curled the ball over and above him and into the roof of the net.

Welbeck didn’t have long to wait for his second and in the 31st minute he had made it four. A burst forward by Andrew Tutte from midfield saw him clip a pass over the Slovenian defence and Welbeck was there to slot home an almost identical finish to his first.

Slovenia were then dealt a blow in the 36th minute, when defender Boban Jovic was shown a straight red card, his second dismissal of the tournament, for a fierce looking challenge on Lansbury. The right-back couldn’t even walk back to the dressing room, as he was stretchered off after injuring himself in process.

That gave further impetus to England and it was 5-0 in the 37th minute when Delfouneso skilfully controlled and juggled the ball in the area from another Lansbury flag-kick before volleying home on the turn and helping the Lions put one foot into the semi-final.

England will have been disappointed with their start to the second half though, as a ball over the top was picked up by Dejan Dimitrov and he cut inside from the left before firing a low shot past Steele and into the corner to give his team some consolation.

It looked as though there would be more goals in it for England too, with Welbeck and Murphy both seeing shots well saved by Radan, before Joe Bennett embarked on a jinking run from the left and into the box, where his eventual shot was well saved by the Slovenian stopper.

More worrying for England by this stage was the conduct of the Slovenian players, who seemed more intent on kicking anything that moved with Lansbury taken off more in protection after yet another robust attempt at tackling him.

England answered in the best possible way though, as substitute Andros Townsend crossed into the centre for Delfouneso to sweep home his second from close range.

Substitute Nile Ranger then got in on the act, when he ran through into the box and slid a shot past Radan to make it seven with more than 15 minutes still to play.

There were further chances for England too, Tutte was unfortunate to see a shot hit the bar after good work by Murphy and Delfouneso came close to a hat-trick but his effort went wide from close range. Bennett’s free-kick was then superbly saved by Radan for what would have been a goal on his full debut.

There couldn't be any complaints though, as the Lions had more than done their job and knew their Euro adventure would continue further into the week.
