So I guess they're a little better than thought (although don't know how strong Charlton Team was)
Forest Green Rovers Official Site - 19/07/2009 - Mangan too Slick for Charlton Athletic
Andy Mangan was again on song as football returned to The New Lawn with a visit from League side Charlton Athletic. The prolific striker fired Rovers into a 2 goal lead before the break and although the visitors pulled a goal back through Chris Dickson his striking partner David Brown adding a late goal to give Rovers a well deserved 3 – 1 win.
Groundsman Matt Rainey had worked wonders during the summer break, producing the perfect carpet for Manager Jim Harvey who likes for slick passing football. It was this kind of football that generally gave the illustrious opponents the run around and their defence seemed unsure how to contain Mangan from the off.
Rovers opened their account on 20 minutes when Mangan outstripped the Charlton defence to poke the ball under Darren Randolp in the visiting goal. The striker increased his tally 5 minutes later when Andy Taylor picked him out with a long ball and this time he volleyed the ball home with ease.
Several substitutions in the second half disrupted play and it was no surprise to see the visitors pull a goal back 10 minutes from the end. A slip in the defence left Dickson with a clear run on goal and the striker fired low under the diving Terry Burton. Not to be down heart Rovers rallied again with Brown firing home to give Rovers the deserved win.
Forest Green: Burton, Taylor, McDonald, Ayres, Preece, Stonehouse, Brown, Lloyd, Mangan, Platt, Smith. Subs: Else, Burge, Pugh, Baldwin, Pass (G/K), Davies, Palmer, Fowler, Mensah, Winter, Casey, Shaze.
Charlton Athletic: Randolp, Wagstaff, Basey, Semedo, Brown, Fortune, Stavrinrou, Spring, Fleetwood, Dickson, McLeod. Subs: Clark, Mambo, Binks, Small, Bellamy, Davisson.
Attend: 732 Man of the Match: Andy Mangan
