Guangzhou had a perfect start against the leaders Shandong Luneng as Luis Ramirez headed the opening goal. But the champions grabbed a 1-1 draw courtesy of the head of on-fire striker Han Peng.
Shandong are the only likely Chinese participant in the second round of the Asian Champions League, needing only a win against Indonesian club Sriwijaya.
If so, Serbian striker Miljan Mrdakovic will be axed by the club and Roda Antar drafted in.
Tianjin fought back to earn a 1-1 draw with Shanghai Shenhua.
It was a tough match for Tianjin's Italian star Damiano Tommasi after his nephew passed away last week.
In an attempt to cheer up the midfielder, Tianjin's fans made a large banner that expressed their love for him. This former Roma player gave another good performance.
After 20 minutes, Shanghai midfielder Chen Tao curled an unstoppable free kick toward the top corner but Tommasi somehow managed to head it over the bar.
Shanghai took the lead on the hour thanks to Hernan Barcos. Tianjin's He Yang equalised 13 minutes later.
The player of the season in 2008, Emil Martinez, was the star of Beijing’s 3-1 win over Shenzhen as they moved into second place.
In the first half, he won a penalty for Beijing that was scored by Tao Wei. Five minutes into the second half he assisted Du Wenhui’s goal and with 24 minutes left, he curled home a beautiful free kick by himself.
The 2,500 Korean fans who live in Dalian went to the stadium to support Ahn Jung-hwan against Chengdu Blades.
Ahn was unlucky and missed three wonderful chances. Zhu Ting saved the day to give Dalian a 1-0 win and a fourth successive victory.
Serbian coach Slobodan Santrac showed his magic again for Qingdao as they defeated Changchun 2-1. In his first three matches, all against strong teams, Qingdao have collected seven points.
Elsewhere, Henan drew 1-1 with Shanxi, Hangzhou thrashed Jiangsu 4-0 and Chongqing and Changsa drew 0-0.
1: Shandong 18 2: Beijing 16 3: Tianjin 16 4: Henan 15 5: Dalian 15
