For the few (if any!) that care
MLS notebook: All-Stars announced; Crew honored at White House July 13, 7:55 PM
Major League Soccer's leading goal scorer, Columbus Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto, was voted to the MLS All-Star First XI, which was unveiled Monday on MLSnet.com's Extra Time segment.
Schelotto, who leads MLS with 10 goals, was selected for the inactive roster in 2008. So this will be his first All-Star Game, which takes place against Everton FC of the English Premier League on Wednesday, July 29, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake (televised on ESPN2, 9:30 p.m. EST kickoff).
Here is the 2009 MLS All-Star First XI breakdown:
• Goalkeeper: Casey Keller (Seattle Sounders FC)
• Defenders: Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Wilman Conde (Chicago Fire), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew)
• Midfielders: Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto FC), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Freddie Ljungberg (Seattle Sounders FC), Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew)
• Forwards: Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)
De Rosario, Donovan, Joseph and Scehlotto are the only returning All-Stars as seven players were voted to their first game for 2009.
In a loaded midfield group, there were several noteworthy faces who just missed the First XI. That list included Chicago Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who ranked just behind De Rosario. Blanco received the second-most media votes in his position behind only Schelotto.
De Rosario actually will not be a part of the festivities because Toronto FC has a CONCACAF Champions League match on July 29 against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
On Monday, July 20, Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear's selections will be announced, as will two Commissioner's selections to round up the team's 18-man roster.
