LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS
Posted on: 25.06.2009
New Blackpool boss Ian Holloway is itching for the 2009-10 season to start as he prepares to give himself "lock, stock and two smoking barrels" to the Seasiders after a self-imposed exile following his departure from Leicester City in May last year.
The former Bristol Rovers, Queens Park Rangers and Plymouth Argyle manager's six-month tenure at Leicester was ended after the Foxes had been relegated to Coca-Cola League 1, this in the wake of an acrimonious departure from Plymouth in order to take over at the Walkers Stadium.
Reflecting on a life-changing couple of years as he looks ahead to his new job at Championship club Blackpool, Holloway said: "Sometimes you need to re-assess yourself and it's done me good - it's revitalised me.
"I just felt I needed a break after 14 years solid in management. I had some awkward issues to deal with, like why I left Plymouth and what happened at Leicester.
"At Plymouth there were people I got on very well with who turned hostile when I left. Sometimes in life you make bad decisions and I certainly did for everybody concerned - it didn't work for any of us.
"At Leicester there were 28,000 fans who didn't deserve their club to go down and I felt desperately sorry for them, so I'm delighted that the club has bounced straight back to the Championship.
"Now I'm looking forward to going back to Leicester and Plymouth, QPR as well, and seeing people who I got on well with and taking my team to challenge theirs.
"You don't go into any relationship and not give a piece of yourself, and that's what I've done at all my clubs. But I now belong to Blackpool lock, stock and two smoking barrels - and I can't wait to get back to work."
Work at Bloomfield Road, admits Holloway, is essentially about Championship survival, the Seasiders having finished 19th in 2008 and then 16th last season following their 2007 promotion from League 1.
The 46 year-old manager is relishing the challenge, however. "Blackpool have punched above their weight," he said, "but they are fantastically well run, they're in the black and I believe that a club like this has got as good a chance as anybody just by being totally sustainable.
"I know what my budget is and I'm looking for players to bring in. There are certain positions I know I can add to, but what the club already has is an honest group of players who work so hard for each other.
"That sort of spirit is etched in the club and I still believe you can go an awful long way on good people and good spirit - and that's what I intend to do."
