Swansea City is pleased to announce that Portuguese legend Paulo Sousa has been formally offered the vacant manager's job at the Liberty Stadium.

Sousa was offered terms on a three-year contract today and the club hopes to officially unveil the 38-year-old as Swansea City's new manager early next week once all the relevant paperwork has been completed.

Swans chairman Huw Jenkins has met with a number of high profile managerial candidates over the last few days, but it was the double Champions League winner who impressed him the most.

"Taking into account the development of the football club over the last two and a half years and the image we have portrayed as a footballing side, myself and the board of directors felt it was vital to continue along the same lines,'' explained Jenkins.

"It was felt that Paulo Sousa is the right man to do this. He is young, bright, enthusiastic and a visionary with extensive knowledge and contacts not only throughout Europe, but world football.

"He will provide Swansea City with a fantastic chance to continue developing and growing over the next few years.

"As a club we feel strongly that we have created something completely different in the British game and become renowned as a quality football team with supporters who really appreciate the way we try and play the game.

"We are committed to keeping this theme moving forward under the leadership and guidance of Paulo Sousa who, I'm pleased to say, has verbally accepted the job.''

The 38-year-old completed talks with the club this morning before returning home to Portugal to discuss the move with his family.

Sousa, who was assistant coach of the Portuguese national team, played 51 times for his country and had spells with Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Juventus, Inter Milan, Parma and Borussia Dortmund.

Widely acknowledged as one of the most celebrated and highly-regarded Portuguese footballers in the modern game, he won the Champions League twice as a player, first with Juventus in 1996 and then Dortmund the following year.

A member of the 'Golden Generation' in Portuguese football, he also won the Serie A title with Juventus and represented Portugal at the European Championships in 1996 and 2000 as a defensive midfielder with the ability to supply a precision pass.

Sousa was appointed manager of Championship club QPR in November 2008, but parted company with the club in April this year while complaining about alleged interference from the club's owners on playing matters.

He is highly regarded within football circles. Renowned as a footballing visionary, he also has excellent contacts throughout world football and is a firm adversary of playing an attractive, passing game.
