Toronto FC found the perfect way to end a slump – host the New York Red Bulls.
Two first-half goals proved to be enough as TFC hung on to win 2-1 before 19,843 fans at BMO Field last night, extending New York's winless streak on the road to 20 games.
"It's a superb win for us," midfielder Carl Robinson said of a victory that ended Toronto's three-game losing streak. "It wasn't a very enjoyable game, but we'll take a scrappy game, an ugly game and a victory after the three defeats that we've just had."
Rookie Sam Cronin, with his first career goal, and Danny Dichio, TFC's all-time leading scorer, with his third of the season, gave Toronto (5-5-4) all the offence it would need.
Albert Celades scored early in the second half for New York (2-10-3) to get the visitors back into it but they couldn't get the equalizer despite several good chances.
"We're delighted with the three points," said coach Chris Cummins. "We had to get ourselves back on track.
"They're a wounded animal," he added. "(I knew) they were going to fight, going to battle and I thought they did that.
"We've shown today that we can grind a result out."
TFC opened the scoring while many fans were still filing into their seats.
Pablo Vitti dribbled inside the penalty area against Seth Stammler when the New York midfielder fell backwards and put his hand on the ball for a penalty in the third minute.
Amado Guevara, Toronto's leading scorer, took it but was stopped by New York goalkeeper Danny Cepero, who dove to his left to get his hands on the ball. Cronin pounced on the rebound and calmly put it into the wide-open net.
"Obviously it was a big, important goal for us," Cronin, the second-overall selection in January's Major League Soccer SuperDraft, said of his first professional tally.
"I was just doing my job. You don't expect Amado to miss from there, but I found myself in a good spot and just put it away."
Dichio doubled the lead just before halftime. Guevara played a beautiful ball through to Vitti, who ran in behind the New York defence. Cepero charged off his line and got a foot on the ball as Vitti tried to go around him at the edge of the penalty area.
But Dichio, following up the play, one-timed the loose ball from 22 yards into the bottom corner of the net for his 14th goal in a Toronto jersey.
New York came out hard to start the second half. Celades beat defender Nana Attakora just inside the penalty area with the ball at his feet and then stepped up to hit a low shot that TFC goalkeeper Stefan Frei got a hand on but was unable to push wide.
It was New York's first goal on the road this season after being shutout in an MLS-record seven straight games. New York outshot Toronto 12-11 on the night.
Toronto, however, had the best scoring chances of the night but was thwarted numerous times by acrobatic saves by Cepero.
The game was moved up from Aug.9 to make way for a friendly against Spanish giant Real Madrid. New York returns June 24 in TFC's next league game.
Toronto travels to Montreal on Thursday for the final game of the Canadian Nutrilite Championship, needing to win by at least four goals to capture the title.
