Sunday Mercury John Gregory: I love my Aston Villa number plate May 31 2009 by Christina Savvas, Sunday Mercury Number’s not up for John FORMER Villa boss John Gregory has rubbished rumours that he has sold his football-related number plate for half a million pounds. Gregory, who left the club in 2004 after four years as manager, said he is proud of the V1LLA plate which he bought during his reign and says he has no plans to sell it on. The 55-year-old successfully bid for the plate at auction in 2000 but despite leaving the West Midlands and now living in Berkshire he has kept hold of it. He said: “I still have the number plate. I bought it in 2000 at auction and by the time I paid for all the extra costs associated with the purchase it cost £44,000. “I am very proud of the plate it means a lot to me.” Personalised number plates have become big business since the vehicle licensing authority first introduced them in 1989. The sale of private plates has amounted to a total of £1.4 billion and despite the credit crunch DVLA made £82 million in the 12 months to April 2009. www.sundaymercury.net/midlands-sport/aston-villa-fc/aston-villa-fc-news/2009/05/31/john-gregory-i-love-my-aston-villa-number-plate-66331-23749463/
