Arshavin agent wants tax-busting pay rise
Despite only signing for Arsenal in January, Andriy Arshavin is already looking for a new contract after the Government's decision to raise the top rate of income tax from 40 to 50 percent next April.
Arshavin signed a three-and-a-half year contract worth £80,000 a week in January after his £15 million move from Zenit St Petersburg, but feels the recent tax hike entitles him to a better contract.
Having complained last month to the Arsenal board about how much tax he was paying, his agent Dennis Lachter has asked Arsenal to increase his client's salary. “Why must a player suffer? The club must deal with the problem,” Lachter said.
"The British Government has suddenly started to solve their problems through the crisis of people who earn big money in the UK. If a player has signed a contract, it is logical that there were certain obligations from the club on the money that the player receives. Now suddenly, this tax rate change. This situation is not simple - no-one wants to lose their money."
