Carlisle News and Star Back on the booze Gazza pulls out Last updated 09:01, Saturday, 06 June 2009 STRICKEN football legend Paul Gascoigne has had to pull out of Newcastle United’s team to face Carlisle United in the Northern Masters after falling off the wagon again. Gazza, who swore he had quit boozing six months ago because he was drinking himself to death, hit the bottle again this week. The 42-year-old alcoholic was caught on camera staggering off a train at Newcastle Central Station and had to be helped along the platform by his mate Jimmy “Five Bellies” Gardner. A spokesman for the Northern Masters said: “Gazza won’t be playing in the event in light of what has just happened.” Stars of yesteryear will line up for Carlisle, Sunderland, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Darlington in the Northern Masters at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle tomorrow. Former Carlisle central defender Gary Bennett will be in action for Sunderland and the Blues’ current first-team coach Graham Kavanagh will pull on a Middlesbrough shirt. Past Newcastle players in action include Brian Kilcline, John Beresford and Rob Lee; Niall Quinn and Marco Gabbiadini are in the Sunderland team and John Hendrie and Dean Windass are in the Middlesbrough line-up. www.newsandstar.co.uk/carlisle_united/latest/back_on_the_booze_gazza_pulls_out_1_564543?referrerPath=/1.49997

He seems to be immersed into his own private Hell, although Paul is the only one who can keep Paul recovering, there seems to be many triggers for him, I heard him on the Radio a few months back and everyone rang in to say how brilliant he was, but I did not think that what he needed to hear as his enterage massages his ego enough as it was. He dose well when he chucks his phone away and imposes an exile on himself, His addiction will have deprive us of his personality but more unfortunately he will have to deprive him self of all those who love him in the game, we dip in and out of his life we know when he is up and when he is down, we never know when he is alone or when he is dry for another day. sad stuff indeed.

Yes its very sad, but he is mentally ill, BiPolar. The drinking is a symptom rather than a cause of his illness. 20-40% of Bipolar individuals end up killing themselves, that is a fact, no one individual can save another individual. I certainly feel sorry for Gazza, but there is a stigma around mental illness in this country more than others I feel "Bonkers Bruno" headlines in The Sun & the like, if you are mentally ill = you must be a bad person, to be honest, its a lot to deal with when you are at your lowest ebb / rock bottom, it could be the thing that pushes you over the edge. Some people dont realise that he is mentally ill, George Best wasnt mentally ill, he was an alcoholic. I really do hope he gets better, but he has got an illness, its not necessarily a concious decision to want to get better, a lot of people with Cancer want to get better, but they dont, do they ??

Shows how easy it is to slip.
He was at the Cup Final in the same corporate area as my friend, who said he was the perfect gentleman posing for pictures and chatting to everyone.
Good luck to the lad.
