Ipswich appoint Magilton - June 2006
Skysport - By Simon Fudge
Ipswich Town have confirmed Jim Magilton as their new manager following the departure of Joe Royle last month.
The former Northern Ireland international becomes the youngest manager in The Championship at the age of 37, having ended a seven-year playing career at Portman Road this past season.
The East Anglian outfit opted to hand the reins to untried Magilton after interviewing several candidates for the post in recent weeks, with Town's academy director Bryan Klug stepping up to become first-team coach.
Town spoke with West Bromwich Albion assistant manager Nigel Pearson before ruling him out, while another candidate in Colin Calderwood opted to leave Northampton Town to become the new Nottingham Forest manager.
Southend United's Steve Tilson and Colchester United's Phil Parkinson were also linked with the post, while Hibernian boss Tony Mowbray turned down the opportunity after speaking with Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks.
For Magilton, his first managerial role is a major task, as Ipswich have designs on winning promotion back to The Premiership next season.
"Jim's outstanding leadership qualities, passion for both the club and the job and his will to be a winner have shone through from the very beginning of the process," Sheepshanks told the club's official website.
"He has outlined a clear strategy and plan of approach that has won the unanimous support of the board in making this appointment.
"With the expert assistance of Bryan Klug, who is qualified as one of the top coaches in England at Uefa Pro License level, we are confident that we have installed a winning partnership.
"There will be those who see this as a gamble, however, this is the case with the selection of any manager from outside.
"We see it is a bold and progressive move, representing both continuity and change.
"They will need time and our patience, but we are confident that their arrival will herald a bright new era for the club."
