Forest bid £1m for striker
.
NOTTINGHAM Forest have made a bid of more than £1m for long-term target David McGoldrick – and are waiting for a response from crisis club Southampton.
The Reds are hopeful that their seven-figure offer will be enough to persuade the Saints to part company with the Nottingham born 21-year-old at a time when their financial future hangs in the balance.
The relegated side remain in administration and had to delay payment of staff wages this month, as their cash flow problems continued.
A consortium led by Saints legend Matthew Le Tissier has lodged a £500,000 bond to allow them access to the club's books, but a takeover is a long way from being secured.
And Forest are hopeful that the bid, lodged officially last Wednesday, will be accepted.
"We have made a bid that is in excess of £1m and are waiting for a response," said chief executive Mark Arthur.
If the move does go through, it would also provide a welcome boost on the opposite bank of the River Trent, with Notts County believed to hold a 20% sell-on clause from the deal that took him to the south coast from Meadow Lane in 2006.
For Forest, the capture of McGoldrick would provide another powerful physical option in attack for Billy Davies, who has already added Dele Adebola to his squad this summer, on a free transfer from Bristol City.
McGoldrick, as well as a 6ft 1in frame, boasts a turn of pace and a direct, robust approach that saw him net 14 goals in a struggling Southampton side last season.
It is thought East Midlands rivals Derby County may also be interested in him, with reports suggesting they have lodged a £600k bid.
But Forest are willing to up the ante for a player they believe can provide significant firepower to their front-line as Davies looks to assemble a squad that can compete in the higher echelons of the Championship.
It is understood that Forest also retain their interest in QPR front-man Dexter Blackstock, who played a key role during a loan spell as the Reds won their fight against relegation.
But, with QPR set to appoint a new manager this week, Blackstock could yet have a future at Loftus Road.
