Gerry Happy With Carlisle Deal
DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Gerry Francis has confirmed the £250,000 signing of 20-year-old central defender Clarke Carlisle from Blackpool. There is also news that 10 players are leaving Rangers.
Gerry says: "We're very pleased to have finalised the deal. We look forward to Clarke having a promising career with QPR.
"Anything involving money is a big transfer for us at the moment. Clarke is a promising youngster. The transfer is very similar to the one with Blackpool a few years ago when we took Trevor Sinclair.
"We met at the same hotel. Like Trevor, Clarke has a young baby and Clarke is similar to the age that we signed Trevor at. So let's hope that Clarke's future turns out as well as Trevor's did.
"Clarke is very young and he's got a lot to learn. He's probably played only about 60 games. But we're not in a position to go out and buy the finished articles I'm afraid. Clarke has been able to come into our wage structure, which is very important to us at the moment. We're looking for him to progress and get better as he goes along.
"We need a nucleus of youngsters at the club as we have a number of pros who are turning 30-plus. Clarke is 6'2" and he comes in as a squad player. We had problems with players being injured over the past season and being out of the team, especially at the back. So I had seen Clarke play a few times and watched him carefully over the past 18 months and I feel he's got potential.
"We have been able to do a few things by players going out. Ten players have left the club as their contracts have ended. So utilising those wages have enabled us to look to bring in some new faces. Maybe three or four will come in utilising the same sort of money. And we are still waiting to see what happens about Chris Kiwomya and Kevin Gallen, who are out of contract."
