GREEN...... 10 clangers a season « Thread Started on Aug 19, 2012, 6:46am »
I said here recently he would drop many clangers and was told it was only pre season. His record for us is 3 clangers in five games. Of all the supposed top keepers we could have gone for he is the most suspect.
On the positive, clanger 1 is out of the way so just nine more to go.
Did anyone see his attempted punch from the corner ? Schoolboy stuff while at the other end the Swansea keeper looked WORLD CLASS.

There were four other moments in the match where his luck saved his arse from even more embarrassment. (& Us, just saw the goals on the news here in a room full of my fellow workers - Thanks a F***en lot guys, I received more ridicule.

Still think we should have gone for swedish keeper Johan Wiland, but oh well. Green was very good for West Ham for quite a few years so hopefully he will improve.

I imagine he will remain our #1 Goalie all season (or at least as long Hughes remains in charge!)
You can't sign a big-time goalie and then discard him...
(But you can buy one or two new defenders - which of course does go back to how many new players you can keep signing, cycle after cycle - which is what Dave McIntyre talks about)

he instills no confidence in the defenders, he does not talk or command his area at all. after yesterday i would sign a good goalkeeper on a season long loan as no team can play with a keeper who is almost certain to give a goal away every game. the first goal yesterday meaant we were chasing the game and that was from a dreadful mistake from green. Hughes has a very big job on his hands as yesterday was a total disgrace and has to look at himself as he has got the players he wanted in and yet still could not get a balanced team.

Like many I never wanted Green. In fact of all those linked to us this year only Shay Given - even prior to his Euro 'heroics' - filled me with more dread. Foster, Forster, Butland I'd have taken any of them and bit your hand off to do so. Green? Ugh!
Still, look on the bright side. Things can only get better after yesterday's debacle! Who knows, maybe this will even push us into the huge bid needed to get Butland in for the future?

Actually even worse if that's the case. A goalie that lacks confidence getting barracked...."
Those of us old enough to remember Gary Sprake at Leeds. Great goalie (Slime!) But Made some HORRENDOUS mistakes. But as I recall, he didn't really let it get to him

Last time we went down from top flight I put 80% of the blame with Jurgen Sommer - he was too dodgy and his errors came thick and fast all season and cost loads of points. You absolutely must have a strong/steady keeper at this level as there are so many players who can ping in shots from all angles, distances and situations. Once a keeper is seen to be hesitant, nervous or lacking conficdence it buoys up the opposition and has a corrosive effect on keper's team, particularly his defence. Green needs to very quickly atone for yesterday and put in a run of solid shows or Hughes will have to drop him and/or get a replacement.

Is Cerny injured or has Murphy overtaken him as no. 2 over the summer? I missed the league cup game last year but I've not heard great things about Murphy!

Green was nervous but playing with a defence he doesn't know, we had a different defensive line up in many of the freindlies also wasn't helped yesterday by the reduced midfield. Our best results were achieved with a line of three stong midfield players in front of the defense yesterday we only had two. Park and Diakite have to be strngthened hopefully by the return of Farulin. It aslo begs the question should Barton serve his 12 game ban and then come back as we don't have much strength in these positions (only Derry and Traore).

As I've said elsewhere on one of the myriad of threads, should have got Butland, a young keeper, learning his trade can get away with a rick like that and recover and he's a confident lad. Green is a seasoned professional and shouldn't be suffering a confidence crisis but as I've also said of him, he's England's number two
