Park's United highlights

With news of Ji-sung Park's departure from Old Trafford, we thought it only appropriate to recall some of the Korean's many highlights in a Manchester United shirt.

Thanks to MUTV you can relive some of his key moments, including fabulous Champions League performances and goals against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Always a big-game player, the midfielder made a real impact at Old Trafford after leaving PSV Eindhoven in 2005 and won four Barclays Premier League titles.

Capped 100 times by South Korea, he will be missed by all United supporters and staff after signing for QPR on Friday.

Park recalls United move

The first day at work is always nerve-shredding. Imagine what it must be like, then, for a foreign player to report to training for their first day as a United player.

It’s hard enough as it is chasing Paul Scholes around Carrington, without language, cultural and climatic vagaries to cope with, too.

Japanese attacker Shinji Kagawa is the latest foreign star to join Manchester United, but he can take comfort in the knowledge that plenty of others have done the same and been hugely successful.

One of them, of course, is South Korea international Ji-sung Park, who arrived at Old Trafford in summer 2005. Here, in an interview conducted with the no.13 in 2010, Ji recalls how he settled into life at Manchester United.

Was it difficult leaving your own country behind and travelling somewhere new?
It can be nerve-wracking, but if you want to play at a high level you have to leave your country. I was 19 when I left South Korea to go to Japan, which obviously wasn’t too far away. I was happy to move at that stage because I wanted to experience a different culture and style of football. Then I came to Europe. There are so many great players here and I wanted to know why they’re so good.

What about joining United? Was that daunting?
When I joined the first training session I looked around and saw all the players I used to watch on TV. I was like, ‘Can I play with these players?’ It was weird. I was confident in my ability, but it was just strange to be alongside these players. There were moments in training, like making a good pass or scoring a goal, that built my confidence.

QPR Official Site

EXCLUSIVE: R'S SWOOP FOR PARK
Posted on: Mon 09 Jul 2012

Queens Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of South Korean midfielder Ji-Sung Park.

Park - a global phenomenon with a vast medal haul to his name - has penned a two year-deal at Loftus Road, after Rangers agreed an undisclosed fee with Manchester United for the midfielder's services.

The 31 year-old's arrival in W12 represents a significant transfer for QPR boss Mark Hughes, who expressed his delight at the signing, commenting: "This is a real coup for QPR.

"We are delighted Ji is going to join us because his record speaks for itself. He has been a big player for Manchester United and played a big part in their success in recent years.

"He is hugely respected there because of what he has achieved, his application to his work and the impact he has on games.

"He was always picked for the big matches because they could rely on him, and we are going to reap all those qualities.

"I think it is fair to say Ji has been attracted not by where QPR are, but where QPR are going. We were able to show him where we feel the Club is heading and he embraced it.

"He felt this was a good option for him and after giving seven great years to United he wanted a new challenge. He sees QPR as very much a Club on the up and wants to be part of something that is going to be very special.

"Ji gets what we are trying to do. He has been part of a well-oiled machine at United and now he wants to have an impact somewhere else.

"This is a huge signing for this Football Club."

Park - who during his time at United has won the FIFA Club World Cup, the Champions League, four Premier League titles and three League Cup winners' medals - said: "I am delighted to be here and be a QPR player.

"QPR is a Club with huge history and tradition, and a great ambition to achieve at the very highest level.

"Tony Fernandes and the Board are striving to accomplish big things at QPR and I wanted to be part of that.

"This project was simply too good to resist, and I am excited about getting started in pre-season and going on our tour to Asia in the coming days."

The midfielder - who has scored in the three consecutive World Cup Final tournaments - added: "I am joining a Club that is very much on an upwards curve - a Club that has a very bright future.

"The infrastructure is in place, with a new training ground and plans for a new stadium, for us to achieve in the short and long term.

"The Manager has a proven track record at Premier League level and I am looking forward to working with him and the rest of the squad to help take this Club to the next level."

QPR Chairman Tony Fernandes hailed the arrival of the South Korean superstar, adding: "I'm overjoyed and can't wait to see him in a QPR shirt.

"I am the ultimate dreamer and myself and Mark have worked incredibly hard to make this happen. Ji has bought into the story and we couldn't be more delighted.

"What started as a little idea is now a reality and it shows that people are beginning to buy into our story.

"It shows out determination and our ambition to build this Club.

"Ji is a global star, with a Champions League winner's medal to his name, and he is as excited about this move as we all are."

Excellent signing. We have actually signed a player from Man U, and he isn't a youth or bit player, but someone who has made over 200 appearances.

Let's not forget as well that there are 20000 Koreans in SW London alone.

Was just talking to my next door neighbour who is a Korean and has never shown any interest in football, he is now talking about buying a shirt and getting along to a few games next season....

Great stuff....

Does this interest in QPR remain when he moves on? or is this a permanent QPR breakthrough into (presumably SOUTH) Korean Hearts and Minds?

Well it certainly is a toe in the door of another market. He is a massive figure in Korea, so I would imagine that it will do no harm when it comes to bringing in more Korean talent....

It can only be good for us really.

So in theory, post-playing career, could be our "Global goodwill Ambassador" for Korea, etc?

And the Tabloid headline writers are probably all set..

We'll get Queens PARK Rangers headlines all over the place, when Park does well and we win or he scores

What a signing for us.

Most importantly he is a very good player & what a bonus that we can utilise his commercial value.

Park Ji-Sung (Hangul: 박지성; Hanja: 朴智星; Korean pronunciation: [pak̚t͈ɕisʌŋ]; sometimes romanised as Park Ji-Suong; born 25 February 1981) is a South Korean footballer who plays as a midfielder for English club Queens Park Rangers. He was also the captain of the South Korean national team until his retirement from international football. He is the most decorated Asian footballer in history, as the first Asian player to have won the Champions League trophy and the first Asian to have played in a final of the UEFA Champions League.[3] Park is able to play anywhere across the midfield and is noted for his exceptional fitness level, discipline, work ethic and off-the-ball movement.[4]
Park began his football career in his native South Korea and played for the Myongji University team before moving to Japan to play for Kyoto Purple Sanga. After Park's national team manager Guus Hiddink moved back to the Netherlands to manage PSV Eindhoven, Park followed him to the Dutch side a year later. After PSV reached the semi-finals of the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League, Park's talents were recognised by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and he signed Park for a fee of around £4 million in July 2005. In his time at Manchester United, Park won the Premier League four times and also won the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. He moved to Queens Park Rangers in July 2012 after suffering a reduction in his number of appearances for Manchester United the previous season.
As a member of the South Korean national team, Park won 100 caps and scored 13 goals,[5] and was a member of the team that finished fourth at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He also represented his nation at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and was captain at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Park scored in all three consecutive tournaments (the first South Korean and only second Asian player to do so) and is currently Asia's joint all-time leading goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup finals with three goals, alongside compatriot Ahn Jung-Hwan, and Saudi Arabia's Sami Al-Jaber. After the 2011 Asian Cup, on 31 January 2011, Park announced that he was retiring from international football at a press conference held by the Korea Football Association in Seoul.[6]

QPR was another of the topics on last night's Monday Night Club and Pat Nevin said of the signing of Park Ji-sung from Manchester United: "If you compare Park with who he may be replacing, ie Barton, can you imagine a more different personality? It tells you what kind of person Mark Hughes wants in his team, hard working, decent player who will give selflessly to the club and is not particularly interested in himself."
