Telegraph - Nick Squires, Rome

Italy's exclusive Billionaire club to close

For more than a decade it has hosted a champagne-quaffing jet set of supermodels, oligarchs and Hollywood stars but Billionaire, a legendary nightclub on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, is to close.

The move was announced by its flamboyant owner, Flavio Briatore, who accused the technocrat government of Mario Monti of fostering a new climate of sobriety and social envy, fuelled by a crackdown on tax evasion which has targeted the owners of luxury boats and expensive sports cars.

“In Italy if you have a big boat and you arrive in a port, you are seen as either a bandit or a thief,” the Formula One impresario told an Italian magazine, Chi. “That’s not good. This government has fostered a sort of social hate.”

In contrast, the exclusive nightclub in Porto Cervo flourished under Silvio Berlusconi, who has a large villa just along the coast and is a friend of Mr Briatore.

A Russian model who worked as a hostess at the club is accused of being one of 30 or more women whom the former prime minister allegedly paid for sex, and testified last week in his “bunga bunga” sex trial in Milan.

Mr Briatore, whose glamorous young wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, is a former Wonderbra model, said this summer would be Billionaire’s last season, with the club to close down in the autumn.

Its super-wealthy customers, who park their Ferraris and Lamborghinis outside and pay up to 800 euros for a bottle of Cristal Champagne, will have to find their fun elsewhere.

The club has hosted celebrities such as Heidi Klum, the supermodel, Mike Tyson, the boxer, and the actor Denzel Washington.

“I’ve decided I will no longer invest in Italy,” Mr Briatore said, in a decision described by the Italian media as the end of an era. “I’m sick and tired of the bureaucracy in this country. We create employment and opportunities, but obtaining permits is always a struggle.”

Mr Briatore announced a new venture – he will be the Italian equivalent of Donald Trump in a local remake of The Apprentice.

He will judge young entrepreneurs and reward the winners with managerial roles in his business empire

"..I also find it insulting that qpr-reports site are asking so many questions. They seem to want to know everything that goes on at the club..."
