Euro 2012: England's Frank Lampard ruled out through injury

England's Frank Lampard has been ruled out of Euro 2012 with a thigh injury suffered in training on Wednesday.

The news was confirmed after the Chelsea midfielder, 33, was examined by medical staff after a scan.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will be called into the squad, subject to agreement from Uefa's medical team.

"It's a huge blow for the team, especially coming after the loss of another senior player in Gareth Barry," said manager Roy Hodgson.

"The fact that the doctor cannot guarantee Frank could take part in any of the group matches means we have to replace him in the central midfield area.

"Apart from it being a huge blow to me and the team, I'm especially disappointed for Frank himself," he added.

"He has been in very good form and was looking forward to the tournament. He made a huge contribution towards us qualifying for the Euros so it is cruel to be forced out through injury just before the tournament."

Chelsea's Lampard is one of the most experienced players Hodgson had to call upon, with 90 caps.

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty believes Lampard's absence will be a big loss to the squad.

"Frank Lampard has occasionally been a maligned figure for England - but his loss from the Euro 2012 squad will be a heavy blow for manager Roy Hodgson," he said.

"Lampard has maturity, experience and continues to be a winner as proved by his vital role in Chelsea's Champions League and FA Cup victories.

"He may not have started England's first Euro 2012 game against France but his presence and professionalism around the squad is always beneficial and he would have been determined to force his way into the side."

Manager Roy Hodgson is already without another experienced midfielder in Barry, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering a groin injury in the 1-0 win over Norway.

If Henderson, 21, is allowed to replace Lampard then Liverpool will be the most represented club in Hodgson's squad, with five, despite a disappointing season which saw them eighth in the Premier League.

Even though he aint many peoples cup of tea, i reckon he had something to offer still, i reckon the goal that was 17 foot over the line against the Germans will stick with him now he aint got the chance to right that wrong in a major tournament.

Probably faked it so he could have a few extra weeks off!! Most of the so called super players couldn't give a rats arse about playing for england as they have no pride............As shown in the world cup failing!!!

Hope his thigh becomes a serious injury & spreads to his balls!!!

There were all sorts of rumours flying around here in the South West of Ireland about him paying a lot of money to book a wedding venue in July after the Euros!!
I guess now he can get married any time if he chooses to still go ahead with it ;)

If Lampard was Spanish his international caps would be zero
Never been good enough at international level and will not be missed apart from by his bi-mate Terry

I didn't know John Terry was a member of this website? They should have sent Crouch after Carroll displays another spectacular failure.

My reaction when I heard Fatman was out the team? Well some good news for England at last - and maybe their slim odds of winning it have improved somewhat.

No loss at all.

Now if they can keep Terry at home and see sense and keep Rooney at home as well then they might, just might do well.

Terry's thigh strain being nothing trivial would be a massive benefit. ::)

I predicted that England would draw all group games 1-1 but that was before we lost Lampard etc.

His absence boosted our hopes of qualifying & if Terry follows him to the exit door our hopes will be further improved.

We needed Lampard so this is a blow and besides I was hoping he'd bow out his international career on a high. He's been a great ambassador for England.
