QPR U18s 1 Millwall U18s 5
Jake Gallagher scored twice to crown a five-star show from Scott Fitzgerald's exciting young charges as they swept aside QPR in style.
The Lions, who finished the match with Aiden O'Brien (U15s) and U14s goalkeeper Yousef Mersin on the field, produced a superb display against their London rivals.
Although the home side struck first, courtesy of Ed Harris' 10th-minute header past Wayne Drummond, Millwall responded were purpose and leveled just 10 minutes later thanks to a Kiernan Hughes-Mason penalty after the striker had been fouled in the danger zone.
The Lions pressed forward in search of a second goal and went close on a number of occasions. The best chance followed great play between Grant Ludford and John Marquis to set up Hassan Janneh, but his close-range effort flew wide.
Marquis himself went close just before the break, firing inches off target from a fine Kamil Tevfik through ball.
The second half belonged totally to Millwall. The writing was on the wall as early as the 48th minute when Hughes-Mason was fractionally wide with a lob over the keeper having been played in by Ikenna Ofoche.
Ofoche then had a super strike on goal brilliantly pushed away by Hoops keeper Niki Bulmer whilst Hughes-Mason continued to cause the home defence real problems with his trickery on the flank.
Millwall's pressure finally paid off on 68 minutes when the lively Hughes-Mason was brought down around 22 yards out. Ludford fired in the resulting free-kick and although keeper Bulmer got a hand to the shot, he dropped the ball invitingly for Gallagher to prod home.
Fitzgerald's side put themselves firmly in the driving seat just six minutes later with a somewhat fortuitous effort - this time Gallagher's strike from distance hit a home defender and the ball looped up over the keeper and into the net.
The best goal of the game - and Millwall's fourth - came 10 minutes from time. Ofoche, who was 10 yards out and with his back to goal, met Hughes-Mason's cross with a perfectly executed overhead shot that gave the keeper no chance.
At the other end defenders Pat O'Connor and Omar Beckles combined to break up a dangerous Rangers attack to deny the home side a second goal.
The Lions were not finished, however, and when Hughes-Mason and Marquis played a series of one- twos through the heart of the home defence on 84 minutes, Marquis was perfectly placed to apply the finishing touch to a sublime move to complete the scoring.
Team: Drummond (Mersin, 84mins.), Tevfik (O'Brien, 86mins), Ludford, Rogers, O'Connor, Beckles, Hughes-Mason, Gallagher, Marquis, Janneh, Ofoche (Stephenson, 86mins). Sub not used: Higarty.
