I cant make up my mind whether i want a Bolton or Villa win tonight. Even a draw would be a good result for us tonight. its a strange one...

A Villa win guarantees Bolton will be under even more pressure and likely to crack. That disallowed goal could yet haunt us and should it do, I will be making sure everyone remembers the officials whom F***ed us over!

Probably a Villa win although that would take one more team out of the mix as Villa would be pretty much safe - although a draw wouldn't be a disaster.
Definitely don't want Bolton to win this one.

cant see how people think that disallowed goal has sent us down. not as if it was a last minute winner. did we play like we would of won the game after it? was just a terrible decision, but will have no outcome on our long season apart from in the imagination of people who want it to be a reason if we go down.

I agree with Lone on this and disagree with you Mike. If the goal wasn't disallowed at the least we would have got a 2-2 draw against Bolton. If that was the case. We would be on 35 points and Bolton woul be on 28 points. That's a 7 point gap instead of just 4. It would also mean that we would be 4 points above Blackburn 1 point above Wigan and only 1 point below Villa. That being the case. 1 more win might have been enough to clinch safety as opposed to us looking at 2 wins.
Not been given that goal has made a significant impact to what should have been. We're not debating offsides or sending offs. Its us scoring a goal and the officials not seeing it. Inexcuseable and indefensible in my opinion.

I agree with you kat.
One thing I would like to put forward though, was that disallowed goal the reason we have gone on our run of home wins??? Did that cause our squad to really come together with an 'us against the world' view??

Whilst we are looking this way and that at the predicted results at the bottom of the table, next weeks Utd v City match could have a huge impact. If Utd win - great, I think the City players are of the type to not put in a full shift in their last match (provided Utd dont slip up again) but If City win and we need it...I wont look forward to that.

Hoping its done and dusted before then Alpha , as long as we beat Stoke and those other 3 results go in our favour unless we lose more than 5-0 to City we wont have anything to worry about.

To be honest it could be a bit of that. It could also be a case of Hughes's system now taking place.Ex Fans and ex players of his previous teams have said it took aboiut 8-10 games to bed in. I'm hoping that's the case.

Personally, I think it is down to the crowd for the most part. Booing Joey Barton got him taken off at Liverpool and the crowd reaction to Mackie coming on really took us to victory that day. From then on the home crowd has been immense, and really giving it to the opponents.
It would also explain our crappy away form.

I daresay we'll agree to disagree, so call me Arsene because I don't see it.
It is interesting to telescope a whole vast complexity of incidents into one moment of sheer bad luck, but does it make sense? Were all the excellent performances in our league and cup campaigns of 1967 meaningless if it was the case that one little bit of luck, one dodgy decision, deprived someone else of a result they needed?
Few of us would think so, unless we were the Club that lost out. Then that incident would stand out as a premium moment while everything else - including our excellence - was discounted.
If something negative has so much more importance than the absolutely vast collection of mistakes, omissions, failures to do even the basics, missing skill, experience, vision, understanding, shambolic organisation, sheer incompetence and even lack of obvious concentration and effort also count, how?
How could one moment matter more than all that? If we had been brilliant, hammering goals in game after game, how could it?
It couldn't. It wouldn't matter at all. How many misplaced passes? 2? 20? 200? 2,000? 20,000?
And what about the good stuff that earned us those points? Decent saves, good tackles, timely interceptions, neat, excellent and even brilliant stuff. Was it all insignificant in accumulating that points total?
Was that all down to the officials too? Because they allowed the goals, gave the free kicks or corners we exploited. They are part of it, but a very small one. If Barca had had issues with the Chelsea goal the other night, while even Chelsea supporters admitted that they spent long periods of the game wondering when they'd get another touch of the ball, would it really have been the officials' fault that they lost?
How much possession, domination, superiority, quality do they need to get a goal.
For Christ's sake, even WE scored against Chelsea .
And kept a clean sheet!
Great posts, great thread.

Ach 1-2 after 64 minutes. Villa scored, Bolton followed with two quickies.

That is what worries me because I see both Bolton and Wigan finishing above Aston Villa.

I agree, I do not see them winning another game this season. My only concern is will we ?
Stoke will be a massive game CPR.

CPR I love your optimism and I really hope you are right. I have been feeling really positive about our chances of surviving but today before tonight's game I just felt that looking at our games ahead I really struggle to remain positive but you have cheered me up.
Cheers and remain positive .

Of course Mike Hunt you also considered that were were all over Bolton and if the goal had of stood, they would have stayed broken and we might have actually won the game. But with it being disallowed it gave them a confidence boost, killed our own for a while and we lost.
After todays result, it makes my point even more pertinant. Bolton now being only 1 point behind with a game in hand, whereas they could/should now be 4 or 6 points behind us with their game in hand.
