Hi guys, the fulham angle here on mark hughes.he walked into the cottage and it never really seemed that his heart was really in it,and a couple of days after this, the villa job became available. He never seemed to get over this in my eyes.
Thus he did not really have a pre-season to prepare with his new team. But he was left a very efficent, well drillled and experienced team, wall to wall with strong leaders, schwarser, the superb brede hangerland, hughes ,danny murphy, zamora,aj.I think that it fair to say that he was quite surprised with the the quality on offer.
We owe a huge debt to roy hodgson at fulham who really pushed things on the club, worked so hard on the training pitch, and really did leave a good set up for the next manager.
It is the last third of the pitch where we needed improving,we have been crying out for some pace and creativity upfront/wide.To this end hughes signed moussa dembele,a superb signing at £5 mill .When he adds a touch more end product ,he will be palying in the champions league. And as his agent is kia, that may well be sooner than we would hope. Thus from this angle you may well see some good signings.
He also signed salcido, the mexican left back, decent going forward, but poor defensively. And a back up central defender in halliche from algeria, who with the likes of hangerland et al was never going to get a look in.
I t was a very slow start, and we then had bad luck with zamora getting injured, and shortly after dembele at stoke, when we were losing 2 nil with 10 mins left.I could not see why hughes did not take moussa off with the game lost. You are always asking for it at stoke.
There was a bit of a crisis with the boxing day defeat to the hammers, where we should have put the game to bed ,but despite the odd rumblings of discontent, the board stayed loyal,as they do tend to,and we pushed on,especially when we got the injured players back.
Tactics wise, pretty much a 2 banks of four man, like roy was himself. He likes to be strong at the back, not to concede from set pieces, and to press teams in midfield.I think in time he would have looked to bring in some pace, this year ,if he had stayed. He did always seem keen on wright philips.
Hughes without doubt is a talented manager.A bit in the george graham mould,to my mind, keeps aloof and his distance from the players.Mark bowen is the main coach without a doubt. And hughes does not come alone or cheaply, with his estimated coaching staff costing according to david sullivan,in the region of£ 8 million or so.
Thus fernandes has clearly put his money where his mouth is,and i would imagine hughes has negotiated for himself a very large transfer pot.Be cause fulham have said that they and hughes had agreed transfer targets.AND TO BE FAIR TO US,jol has spent nearly 20 million or so this season himself,so that seems pretty decent from my end.
Hughes does seem to always have an eye on the next post.HE does seem to have a very high opinion of himself, without a doubt.A good manager ,yes, without a doubt. But an elite real top drawer manager, for clubs like barcelona, chelsea, man utd,et al,hmm i am not so sure!
We are now on a re- building curve at fulham, now which jol to his credit, has been prepared to take on,even though, the jury is still out on him a touch.I always got the impression that hughes thought it was a real tough ask and decided to see what else is out there.
It certainly makes for a very lively derby encounter on the 25th,.Here's to then boys and good luck
