Shannon: to play General Zod
Hollywood star Michael Shannon made his Soccer AM debut on Saturday and revealed he is a QPR fan!
Nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Revolutionary Road, Shannon is probably best known to viewers on these shores as Nelson van Alden from the critically acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
The 37-year-old began his career as a stage actor in Chicago, before making his film debut in 1993 in Groundhog Day.
Other notable roles came in Pearl Harbor, 8 Mile and Vanilla Sky, however it was his performance in Revolutionary Road, alongside Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio, which really made the world stand up and take notice and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the process.
The Kentucky-born star has recently been cast as the villain General Zod in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, Man of Steel and he told Helen and Max why it is such a challenging role.
"Well, it's a little intimidating," he said. "I saw the originals with Terence Stamp and he's so good you know, and really scary, too.
"It's out in 2013 so you all forget about it and then it will be like a surprise! You'll all be like 'oh Superman!'"
As ever Helen and Max and had lots more questions for him, as well as a little surprise! Here's what he had to say:
On why he supports QPR: I have godson who lives in Shepherds Bush, Georgie Brown, and he's a QPR fan. I know he's going to the game tomorrow against Chelsea and I'm going to try and go with him. It's sold out but we'll see.
On finding out Mark Bircham had offered his tickets to him for the game!: Holy Moly! Thanks Mark. Oh that is great news. Thank you.
On his latest film 'Take Shelter': It' a great script and a very interesting character and I enjoy the people I work with. Jessica (Chastain) - who plays my wife in the film - is a great actress and on the rise, so I actually really enjoyed making it.
On Boardwalk Empire and Stephen Graham: It's frustrating because I've really loved Stephen Graham ever since I saw him in This Is England, I just thought he's a top-notch actor, but our storylines don't really cross on the show because I'm playing this strange agent who's holed up with this floozy and he's playing Al Capone and is off with all these other gangsters. So we're kind of separate, but I did go to his birthday party. He had his birthday in New York, it was a very nice evening...and he disappeared!"
