Steve McClaren has won a crucial power struggle in his bid to save his job at Nottingham Forest - after the shock departure of David Pleat.
McClaren’s troubled reign has received a timely boost after ex-Spurs boss Pleat left his £120,000-a-year job as a football consultant at the City Ground.
Former England coach McClaren is under heavy pressure after a nightmare start - Tuesday night's humiliating 5-1 defeat to Burnley leaving him just three points off the bottom of the Championship.
But he has scored a major triumph after making it clear that he would not work with Pleat, who has been told to leave his post by close friend and Forest chairman Nigel Doughty.
Pleat, 66, was brought in by Doughty in August 2006 to assist the board on transfers and recommending players, but his presence has been a constant source of frustration for Forest’s managers.
McClaren’s predecessor, Billy Davies, fought a long-running battle to get Pleat ousted and managed to get the club's much-maligned transfer panel disbanded last season.
But Davies was sacked in June while Pleat stayed on, and McClaren has been running into problems ever since his appointment.
Earlier in the season, it is understood, Pleat invited Fulham winger Keanu Marsh-Brown to a trial with a view to a loan deal, without consulting McClaren.
Marsh-Brown, 19, turned up in Nottingham but was promptly sent packing by a stunned McClaren, who made his feelings clear to Doughty.
Forest’s lack of signings in the transfer window increased the frustration and McClaren even considered walking out after just three months.
But he told Doughty during showdown talks that either he or Pleat would have to leave - and Pleat’s exit was confirmed earlier this week.
McClaren has won only two out of nine Championship games, but will be given time and backing to turn around the club’s poor start.
Following the Burnley debacle, he has been given the green light to continue lining up new loan players.
QPR midfielder Lee Cook may sign after playing for the reserves against Stoke on Wednesday, along with trialist Dutch forward Riga Mustapha.
McClaren is also trying to identify other younger, cheaper players who can come in and give his team more energy.
