England manager Fabio Capello says he does not trust Joey Barton
• Midfielder is not in squad for game against Holland
• Capello fears 'dangerous' Barton's ill-discipline
Fabio Capello does not trust Joey Barton enough to consider him as a realistic England candidate.
Despite the player's own insistence that he is one of the most effective midfielders in the Premier League, Barton's international career still only extends to a 12-minute substitute appearance against Spain at Old Trafford in 2007 – a cap the estranged Newcastle United player earned during Steve McClaren's time in charge.
Even though Steven Gerrard was ruled out by a thigh injury and Capello had to work on the basis that Arsenal's Jack Wilshere was not available either, Barton's name was not among the squad unveiled yesterday evening for Wednesday's friendly with World Cup runners-up Holland at Wembley.
It is not as though Capello feels Barton is a bad player. In fact, the England coach sees a lot of positive attributes in the 28-year-old. He simply feels the Newcastle midfielder – transfer-listed earlier this week after his blast against the club's hierarchy on Twitter and with a string of problems both on and off the pitch – is too volatile to be trusted.
"He is a good player but he is a dangerous player because sometimes you could end up playing 10 v 11. He might get sent off," Capello said.
When it was put to the Italian that Barton's "head might go", the answer was firm, before a further explanation as to why he could not be considered this week. "Yes," Capello said. "But this is not a good moment to decide something about him. When a player is fighting with his club, it is normal to stay outside. The relationship between a club and a player is really important."

Gordon Sharrock: Warnock dig is a bit rich
9:03am Wednesday 14th September 2011
MIGHT have given some credence to the argument that Fabio Capello’s difficulty in expressing himself in English makes him a liability had it not been Neil Warnock who raised the issue.
The QPR boss objected to the national coach saying it would be “dangerous” to pick Joey Barton – newly recruited to the Rangers’ ranks – because of his disciplinary record.
Inferring that Capello’s poor English could lead to misinterpretation and cause problems for players and club managers, Warnock claimed: “It’s dangerous to say things like that.”
And this coming from a bloke who has upset more of his fellow managers than you can swing a cat at – in perfect English!
