U.K: SOCCER: QUEENS PARK RANGERS DEFEAT FIRST DIVISION DERBY COUNTRY IN F.A. CUP MATCH.Clip Description:
Story
QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS, A LONDON SECOND DIVISION SIDE, HAS BEATEN A FIRST DIVISION TEAM TO REACH THE LAST EIGHT PLACES IN THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CUP COMPETITION.
IN A HARD AND EXCITING MATCH THEY BEAT FIRST DIVISION DERBY COUNTY ONE NIL TO MAINTAIN AN UNBEATEN RECORD ON THEIR HOME GROUND THIS SEASON.
THE IRONY OF THE MATCH WAS THAT THE GOAL THAT GAVE RANGERS VICTORY CAME OF THE BOOT OF DERBY CAPTAIN DAVE MACKAY. RANGERS' FRANK CLARKE SENT A HARD SHOT TOWARD THE NET BUT AS THE GOALKEEPER DIVED FOR IT THE BALL WAS DEFLECTED BY MACKAY'S BOOT AND WENT INTO THE NET.
LONDON BOOKMAKERS ARE NOW QUOTING RANGERS AT ODDS OF 25 TO 1 TO WIN THE CUP. THE FAVOURITES ARE LEEDS UNITED AT 9 TO 4.
RANGERS, INSPIRED BY FORWARD RODNEY MARSH, HAMMERED AWAY AT DERBY'S DEFENCE THROUGHOUT THE MATCH BEFORE SCORING IN THE 84RD MINUTE. MARSH STARTED MOST OF RANGERS MOVES IN A GLORIOUS OPENING BURST AND DERBY WAS LUCKY NOT TO BE TWO OR THREE GOALS DOWN AT THIS STAGE. WHILE RANGERS KEPT UP STRONG PRESSURE ON THE DERBY DEFENCE, THEIR OWN DEFENCE WAS GIVEN AN EASY TIME.
THE MATCH DEVELOPED INTO A FASCINATING TUSSLE FOR MID-FIELD CONTROL WITH CAPTAINS MACKAY AND TERRY VENABLES DIRECTING THE TACTICS. RANGERS FINISHED THE HALF WITH A PARALYSING BURST BUT ALTHOUGH UNDER SEVERE PRESSURE DERBY REFUSED TO PANIC.
IN THE SECOND HALF RANGERS KEPT UP THE PRESSURE--WITH MARSH AGAIN CAUSING MOST OF THE TROUBLE. DERBY CAPTAIN MACKAY WORKED HARD IN DEFENCE AND WAS ONCE BOOED BY THE CROWD FOR A TACKLE.
