BRENTFORD YOUTH 1 QUEENS PARK RANGERS YOUTH 2
Posted on: Sat 20 Aug 2011
Brentford's Youth Team slipped to their second defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Queens Park Rangers at Jersey Road in the Football League Youth Alliance.
It was a similar story to the first day of the season - a 3-1 defeat against Northampton Town - as Brentford dominated the game in terms of possession but looked frail at the back and missed the opportunities they created.
The result could have been very different had Charlie Adams converted a penalty when Brentford trailed 1-0, but in the end The Bees lacked the quality to sneak an equaliser.
Brentford had the better of the first half - the first chance of the game came after ten minutes when Adams ran into the box and caused panic within the Rangers defence but his shot was blocked.
Much of The Bees' play went through Adams and Emmanuel Oyeleke in midfield and it was Oyeleke who was next causing the QPR defence problems.
His pass created a chance for Jack Ward but the striker's shot was blocked.
Aaron Scott worked hard up front - he had a shot comfortably saved from outside box and fired over a few minutes later after combining with Adams.
The Bees best effort of the first half came minutes before the interval when they won a free kick, Adams effort was heading towards the top corner of the net before the keeper spectacularly turned the ball over the bar.
QPR came more into the game in the second half and took the lead five minutes after the interval.
A cross was floated to the back post, Jack Middleton was left grounded and the Rangers striker had time to head home from close range.
Oyeleke did his best to immediately pull the Bees back on level pegging but his powerful shot was parried away and Tremayne Charles couldnt prod the ball home.
Brentford's defensive frailties were exposed again when QPR missed a free header after a corner.
But moments later they were handed a lifeline when the Rangers keeper recklessly fouled Charles as he raced into the box.
Adams stepped up and took full responsibility.
Unfortunately his shot was a little too high and it cannoned back off the top of the bar.
Brentford were made to pay for that miss as QPR doubled the lead when a driven corner wasn't cleared and it was bundled home at the back post.
The Bees did pull a goal back immediately when a Sam Beale dangerous cross wasn't cleared and Oyeleke headed home from close range with 22 minutes remaining.
The Bees continued to apply pressure but it was their West London rivals who continued to squander chances.
Rangers should have secured victory deep into stoppage time when another long and high free kick wasnt dealt with - Middleton rushed out and missed the ball, but fortunately the ball struck the post and went away to safety.
Youth Team Manager Jon De Souza was left frustrated after the Bees had the bulk of the possession for the second game in a row.
He said: "I am going to sound like a broken record from two weeks ago.
"I am really disappointed with the result today.
"I thought we were the better team from start to finish.
"We passed the ball better than QPR and had the better players.
"I told the boys at the end that QPR are trying to get their players through to a Premiership team.
"I didnt think we were a million miles behind them and had the best seven or eight players on the pitch.
"Apart from the two boxes we were the best team - but unfortunately its what happens in those two boxes that affects football matches.
"The first goal we conceded was poor defending and the second goal was from a set piece.
"We had half chances which we didn't take and we have to improve to make half chances into goals.
"At the moment we are turning chances into misses.
"Charlie Adams penalty miss was disappointing.
"I can't fault the boys effort, work rate or desire to get onto the ball.
"We have to get back onto the training ground and improve on getting right in the boxes.
"If we get that right we will become a very good team. ]
"I am happy with the team, but disappointed they didn't get the result they deserved."
