Missed it!Facebook to televise FA Cup openerPA Wednesday, 17 August 2011 Non-league sides Ascot United and Wembley FC will kick off this season's FA Cup on Friday night, with the game being streamed to a potential audience of 700 million people. Social networking site Facebook are 'televising' the clash, which, although will not reach the majority of its potential viewers, is the first of its kind anywhere in sport. A 90-minute stream will be provided by Budweiser, the competition's new sponsors. "As a long-standing supporter of football globally, Budweiser is committed to brining the world's most prestigious knockout competition closer to the fans," said marketing director Ian Newell. "What better way to demonstrate this than by broadcasting the very first kick to a global audience via Facebook. "This is the first time a FA Cup tournament fixture has been broadcast live on the social network, which is great news for football fans and clubs alike." www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/facebook-to-televise-fa-cup-opener-2339011.html

Listened to Ascot's chairman on 5Live this week. He said the fee they got was "just over 3 figures for each team". Obviously a help but baring in mind the PR Facestalk and Bud got you can't help thinking they were shortchanged.

just over three figures? as in just over 999 pounds making it a grand each, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but still a bit tight could have stretched to 10 grand a team, but thats why there mega minted and i"m not.

That's a lot of exposure for 2 grand. Their execs spend that kind of money on lunch. You are right though. Every penny counts. The Ascot chap said the club had something like 60 teams, kids right up to the first team. Their attendance the week before was 87.

There's only one problem with the game being streamed. As far as I can tell, you have to "like" the Budweiser page. Which is self-libellous.

Initial figures show that 70,000 people clicked the link to watch the match.
For two unknown teams outside of their area that is very impressive for a trial run.
Watch out Sky!
