The Lawyer
Queens park Changer19th August 2011 Selling a 66 per cent stake in a Premier League football club may seem like a divorce, but Formula 1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone clearly sees things differently. After all, the entrepreneur who, together with Italian businessman Flavio Briatore, owned a majority stake in Queens Park Rangers, instructed private client giant Withers for the sale of the shares (see story) - the same firm Ecclestone ditched during his split from his wife. Ecclestone initially turned to Withers divorce and family expert Mark Harper during his separation from Slavica, only to plump for Manches partner Helen Ward instead in an amicable parting of ways (see story). click here But it seems that when it comes to commercial deals and not divorces, Withers will do nicely. He and Briatore turned to big cheese Anthony Indaimo and fellow corporate partner Ben Simpson for advice on the sale of the stake in the West London club, which the firm believes “validates its focus on acting for the wealthy on M&A deals”.QPR manager Neil Warnock was obviously commenting on Withers’ scoop when he told the media: “It’s a momentous day. Everybody connected with QPR should be excited.” ——————————————— www.thelawyer.com/queens-park-changer/1008982.article

The Lawyer - Ecclestone returns to Withers for QPR stake sale
19 August 2011 | By Joshua FreedmanQueens Park Rangers shareholder Bernie Ecclestone has turned to Withers for advice on the sale of his stake in the Premier League football club to Tony Fernandes. Ecclestone and fellow shareholder Flavio Briatore sold their majority stake in the West London club to Malaysian businessman Fernandes for an undisclosed amount in a deal confirmed yesterday (18 August). Ecclestone and Briatore, who together held 66 per cent in the club, hired Withers chairman Anthony Indaimo and fellow corporate partner Ben Simpson for legal advice. The Formula 1 tycoon instructed Withers partner Mark Harper during his divorce from Slavica Ecclestone but parted company with the firm in favour of Manches’ Helen Ward in January 2009 (21 January 2009). Fernandes instructed a Macfarlanes team led by partner and commercial group head Jeremy Courtenay-Stamp, who was assisted by senior solicitor Justin Hope and solicitor James Henderson. Mayer Brown corporate partner David Bates won the role advising steel entrepreneur Lakshmi Mittal, who owns the remaining third of the club. A spokeperson for Withers said: “Withers is pleased to confirm that it acted for the majority shareholder on the sale of its stake in QPR to Tony Fernandes’s Tune Group.” www.thelawyer.com/ecclestone-returns-to-withers-for-qpr-stake-sale/1008978.article
